Jose Mourinho has described new recruit Gedson Fernandes as a player ‘with a huge desire to prove himself’ in the Premier League here at Spurs.

We secured the loan signing of the young midfielder from Benfica on Wednesday.

Still only 21, Gedson has over 70 matches under his belt for Benfica B and Benfica, won the Portuguese ‘Liga NOS’ title, played in the Champions League and, having played through all international age groups, has two full caps to his name for Portugal.

Jose confirmed in Friday’s pre-match press conference that Gedson will be involved at Watford in the Premier League on Saturday (12.30pm).

Of course, young, of course with a huge desire to prove himself in the league of his dreams, because he always wanted to come to England

Jose Mourinho on Gedson Fernandes

Jose told us: “He’s a player who can play in different positions in midfield, in different systems, he’s quite multi-functional in that sense.

“Of course, young, of course with a huge desire to prove himself in the league of his dreams, because he always wanted to come to England.

“At the same time, he has experience. Benfica is a big club, he’s played in Champions League matches, for example away at Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, not easy matches for a kid. He did it.

“He only has two ‘A’ (full) caps for the national team, but two caps at the age of 19, 20 prove that he’s a kid with a certain level of experience. It’s an incredible story because he’s so happy to come to Tottenham and London, where his family have lived for a few years.”
