Midfielder previews Southampton test

Despite the euphoria of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday, Christian Eriksen admits the squad's attentions turned immediately to this weekend's test of Southampton.

Currently on a three-game winless run in the Premier League, collecting maximum points at St Mary's will be vital with our control over third spot coming under increasing pressure in recents weeks.

After our encouraging performance and victory against Borussia Dortmund, Danish international Christian is hoping we can use that result to get ourselves back on track on the domestic front.

We want to win every game and if that creates a gap that’s great, but we just want to get the three points on Saturday.

“We want to win every game and if that creates a gap that’s great, but we just want to get the three points on Saturday,” our number 23 explained.

“It doesn’t matter what happens to the other teams, we need to focus on ourselves and get the points because we’ve had a few tough games and not had the results we wanted.

“We’re straight back on track (with the victory over Dortmund) though, there's no break and all our focus is on Southampton. It’s a very important game. We have lost a few points recently in the league now, so we need to get some points back.

“I think we can improve and now the big boost from the Dortmund win will hopefully carry us on.”

Improvement was certainly seen in our visit to Germany on Tuesday night as we won 1-0 to secure a 4-0 aggregate scoreline and book our place in the last eight of the Champions League.

Harry Kane might have grabbed the winner in the second half at Signal Iduna Park, but we were thankful as well to those at the other end with some resolute defending and a series of superb saves from Hugo Lloris.

It was a professional display that delighted playmaker Christian, but he is not getting carried away as he knows we have to take everything one game at a time.

“It wasn’t just a mature performance from us on the night, there was a bit of luck and Hugo’s gloves! Those were the things in Dortmund’s way,” he said.

“We got a great result in the first game and on Wednesday, it was about finishing it off. We could have done better but at the end it doesn’t matter because we’ve got what we wanted.

“We will take it one game at a time. We’re through to the next round, we’ve had experience for the last few years in the Champions League and now we’ve got this far.

“We’ve come a long way and we’ve done well to be consistent. We’re now further than last season so that’s a good first step and hopefully we’ll go even further.”
