Joe Rodon is making his debut in European club football tonight as we take on Stade Rennais in the Europa Conference League (kick-off 5.45pm UK) – and he can’t wait to get going.
Arriving from Swansea City in October, 2020, the defender was unable to play any part in our Europa League campaign last term. He then missed out on this season’s play-off round tie with Pacos de Ferreira through injury.
This evening though, having made his return to action as a substitute in Saturday’s defeat to Crystal Palace, the Welshman will make his first start of the season and his first appearance in a European club competition as we take on Rennes in our Group G opener.
The more games I play, the fitter I’m going to be, but I’m happy with where I am right now, and I’ll keep working
“It was obviously frustrating,” he admitted, having missed out on last season’s Europa League campaign. “I kind of understood - it was for a reason, to adapt me and get me into the group. Every player wants to play a lot of games, but sometimes it doesn't go like that and the best thing I could do was just to keep my head down, keep working hard and wait for my opportunity.
“On Saturday (against Palace), I was dusting myself off and getting the cobwebs out, but I was happy to get just under 90 minutes under my belt. Of course, the more games I play the fitter I’m going to be, but I’m happy with where I am right now, and I’ll keep working. I'm excited to get under way (in Europe tonight) and hopefully at the start of a successful campaign.”
