obert Vilahamn was naturally disappointed to lose but was pleased with the improved performance after our 2-0 defeat against West Ham United in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Similar to our previous against Brighton & Hove Albion, it was another positive start at Chigwell Construction Stadium as we caused the Hammers a few problems in the early stages, Ella Morris forcing Kinga Szemik into a strong save, however, it was the hosts who opened the scoring in the 16th-minute when Verena Hanshaw’s deflected effort found the back of the net.
At the other end, we pushed for a leveller as we struck the woodwork twice, Eveliina Summanen’s free-kick hitting the crossbar before Martha Thomas’ effort crashed against the post, before West Ham eventually wrapped up the victory in the final seconds of normal time when Viviane Asseyi’s low free-kick found the bottom corner.
“Very tough to lose another game.” Robert told us afterwards. “It’s not fun to lose several games in a row and we want to make sure we get better.
“However, performance-wise, this is a much better game than the last few, we had some good build-up, we had some really good patterns to break the lines and we created some good chances, so it was more that they were clinical when they get those opportunities.
“But it was a big step forward in the performance and you need to look at it in two ways, everything is not total darkness, you need to look at the performance and how the players tried to play our football.”
We need to find ways to get back up and running and the only way to do that is stick together and keep working on what we need to do.
Robert on falling behind after a strong start…
“It’s one of those moments when they get a deflection and get a 1-0 lead, we had so many good chances after that, we hit the post or crossbar, so it’s tough. But if you look at how the players are trying and how they try for the rest of the game, that’s what you need to look at, and then we need to look at how we can improve in the final third because we need to start scoring goals, and that’s what we will keep working on as you can still see some really good footballers on the pitch, trying to play some good football.”
Robert on not being clinical with our opportunities…
“In football, everyone's been on a good run and a bad run, we’re on a bad one right now, we don’t need to hide that, so we need to find ways to get back up and running and the only way to do that is stick together, keep working on what we need to do, which to score more goals and defend, but I thought we defended quite well expect on those two occasions. The main thing now is we need to find a way to score more goals and that was part of it today.”
Robert on the learnings ahead of Foxes clash…
“I think the steps we took today with how we played is a good step, but I think now we need to get in their box even more and how we convert those into goals, so the focus will be trying to add that to this game plan.”
