Luana Bühler has had to battle through a number of challenges in her footballing career to reach where she is today.

A summer arrival from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2023, where she made over 100 appearances for the Bundesliga side, the defender has featured in 29 games in our colours and was part of our first-ever side to reach the Women’s FA Cup Final in 2024.

Next up in our series, we asked Luana to revisit some of her favourite moments caught on camera throughout her footballing career to date...

"It was actually crazy spending a lot of my youth career playing against boys because, for me, it was normal to play alongside them because there was no visibility of women footballers around."

“These two photos are the start of me playing football, especially with the boys’ team in my hometown with FC Schotz. I went there because my siblings went there and, me being me, I wanted to go anywhere they went, so I joined the football club at the age of seven. I actually played in a boys’ team until I was 16 years old.
“It was actually crazy spending a lot of my youth career playing against boys because, for me, it was normal to play alongside them because there was no visibility of women footballers around. My hometown club never had any girls teams or women’s team until I was about 14 or 15 years old, and I had never seen a women’s game until that point because there was nothing around that I would be aware of. I started to become aware, as I knew after the age of 16, it would be difficult to play with boys and I could start to feel the challenges were getting bigger as they were growing more and getting faster than me, and that’s why I had to find ways of knowing what was available around me."
“This was me playing for my first Women’s club, which started as SC Kriens before changing to FC Lurzen, from the age of 16 to 20 years old. It was really tough at the beginning making that jump to senior football, especially because I still played tennis on the side until I was 16 years old, I still went to athletics sometimes twice a week, so I had a little bit of everything but, at that time, I knew I had to choose one.
"For me, it was quite clear it was football, but there was still a lot of changes. Instead of travelling 20 minutes to training it turned to over an hour by train and bus, running straight to the train station after school and then running to the training ground once I had arrived as I didn’t want to be late. Those were the big differences but it was also adjusting to stuff on the pitch because it was more physical, not necessarily technically at that time, but it was just the physicality as they were grown women, tackles, duels were things I had to learn.
“Then I moved to FC Zurich, I was about 20 years old in this picture. I went to university in Zurich, but I still played in Lurzen at the beginning of it, so I continued to travel the long distance from home to Zurich to the university which was about one-and-a-half hours, then from the university to training it was about an hour, then back home after that nearly every day so there was quite a lot of travelling going on.
“That’s why I decided to join them because the club was also a pretty good one, it was easier for me to join Zurich with my university there, and that went pretty well. We had Champions League qualification, we won the double, and I got my first-ever senior call-up to the national team while playing for them."
“After that, Hoffenheim came to me and that was the beginning of quite a journey for me. It was quite a fast decision I had to make, I think I had around two days to decide if I wanted to join or not.
“This photo is quite special to me as it was with my flatmate, I felt I made some really good connections there and I’m still really close to them. It was my first professional contract, but we still trained in the evening at around 6/6.30pm, so a lot of us were still studying or working on the side.
“However, this changed a lot during the years I was there, I was there for about five years in total, and you could see the growth of the club in those years. After my third season, we secured our spot in the Champions League, that was a goal which we were working towards, and then we actually qualified during the qualifying rounds, we had one tournament and then one knockout game.
“My favourite club is Barcelona, and we played against them at their ground, and that was a pretty amazing game despite us losing. I think the whole journey was pretty special because when I first joined the club, we were in a relegation battle, but we had a really good team that was working together and over the two years, you could see so much progress in the team and as individuals, and I feel that whole journey made it even more special to be part of it all.”

“This was my first international game at home and this was really special for me because one of my only Women’s footballers that I would of heard about was Lara Dickenmann, so I could play my first game in Switzerland, in our home ground, with them and having them be alongside me to help guide me, they helped me a lot to get into the team, be calm and took my nerves away so that was pretty amazing moment for me.
“We then had the European Championships in England in 2022 and this was my first senior tournament with the national team. It’s pretty special for me, this photo, because it sums up exactly what I play football for - the connection with friends and family. My whole family – except one brother – was there, watching me from the stands, and I feel that’s what makes it even more special, that you can share those moments with your loved ones.
“My parents support to help me get where I am today was really big. I’m one of six at home and they always tried to support everyone the same, they could always drive me to games, to tournaments and stuff like that because they just wanted to make it work for us, and I think without them being this dedicated, I would have never made this whole journey so I know I owe my parents a lot for being there for me and trying to make it work."
“I then joined Spurs after the 2023 FIFA World Cup and this was my first game in Lilywhite at Stamford Bridge. It was a pretty amazing first game, to come here and play the opening game against Chelsea, I felt at that moment it was the direction I wanted to go in, these are exactly how these games should feel now and in the future. It was really special to see and a good sign I took the right step to go into this league.
“I feel the FA Cup Final has to be in here as well, a special occasion and I hope I can experience something like that again, where we have a fully-packed Wembley with a great atmosphere. I think because of the way we won our previous games in the competition, it wasn’t always with the most beautiful performances, but I felt the character we showed during that journey is what brought us there I was really proud of the team and the performance, because we always believed we could turn things around and always came back from setbacks."
