Heung-Min Son had been waiting for the opportunity for over two months - and he knew exactly what he was going to do!

Rewind to our final game of 2024, our captain stepped up to take a penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers in December. He hit it with power and pace to the goalkeeper's left but Wolves' goalkeeper Jose Sa was a match to it, palming it away to his right.

Sonny did not forget that moment.

Devastated in his failure to convert - the first time he has been unable to find the back of the net from a spot-kick scenario in his Spurs career* - he had been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to take another, and convert it.

That chance, thankfully, came in our 2-2 draw with AFC Bournemouth on Sunday and the forward duly obliged, firing home from the spot to level the scores late on, helping us to salvage a point.

He was the man to both win it before dispatching it, although he did so in a rather unorthodox way as he clipped home with a panenka finish.

Asked if the penalty had gone the way he had planned, he declared resoundingly, "Obviously, yes! I’m always practising after training. That was the moment I always wanted after my miss against Wolves.

"I just tried to stay calm and just be decisive and do what I choose to do. I was very committed to it. When the ball hit the net, I was very happy that I could help the team."

*There have been two occasions where Sonny has found the back of the net from spot-kick situations, only for them not to be recorded as converted penalties.

Firstly, in February, 2018, when stepping up to take a spot-kick in an FA Cup fifth round decider against Rochdale at Wembley Stadium, the forward stroked the ball home from the spot but the goal was ruled out after Sonny was adjudged to have made an illegal feint before striking the ball. He was booked and the goal was chalked off. A free-kick was then awarded to Rochdale.

Then in February, 2020, Sonny saw a penalty in a 3-2 win at Aston Villa saved by Pepe Reina but he scored the rebound. Technically, as the spot-kick was saved, the penalty is recorded as a miss.
