Players across both our Men’s and Women’s First Team wore colourful, mismatched socks during training on Wednesday in support of Down Syndrome Awareness.
People across the world take part in the #LotsOfSocks campaign, which embraces the sock-like appearance of chromosomes, ahead of World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March.
Individuals born with Down syndrome typically have three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two, and wearing mismatched socks is a way to start a conversation and demonstrate that no two people are the same.
Through the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, the Club delivers several programmes for people with a range of disabilities across our local community. This includes Fair Play Football, which provides a unique combination of psychotherapy, sport and art to improve the lives of vulnerable young people in Haringey.
The Foundation also runs a cerebral palsy (CP) football team that competes in the CP Development League. It is part of a wider football offering to adults with disabilities, with powerchair football being planned for launch towards the end of April and a group for people with Parkinson’s disease also to come.
The Club is also committed to removing barriers for disabled fans to attend matches and has an Access Scheme which enables supporters with access requirements to sit in dedicated viewing areas across the Stadium, as well as providing services to enhance their matchday experience. This includes a Sensory Suite, 66 accessible toilets, three Changing Places facilities, Audio Description services and two spending areas for assistance animals.
