It's back to Premier League action and a trip to the picturesque Craven Cottage, on the banks of the Thames, on Sunday - here, Rob Daly takes a closer look at Fulham...

"Marco Silva’s been using a new formation of late, while Fulham fans may well believe they boast the best left-back in the Premier League. How will Ange Postecoglou tweak things from Thursday night to try and claim a first win at Craven Cottage?"

The return of Ryan Sessegnon

Having left Spurs in the summer, Ryan Sessegnon is now getting minutes at Fulham and scored on his first league start at Wolves last month.

“He started to have a lot of injuries and that took confidence from him, but the most important thing it took was the sharpness to be at this level,” said Marco Silva, of getting the 24-year-old up to speed.

Sessegnon started at left-wing back in a 3-4-2-1 formation and fired home within a minute, keeping wide before racing in behind Wolves’ defence.

The run was timed brilliantly to meet Andreas Pereira’s prodded pass - a moment that were reminiscent of his breakaway goal at Bayern for Spurs.

“We know that Sessegnon is able to play wing-back very well,” explained Silva afterwards. “He has the composure to attack the box in the right moment, like he did for the first goal and with (left-sided centre-back) Jorge Cuenca there, we knew that he was always going to be very well covered.”

Running Robinson

In all likeliness, however, it’ll be Antonee Robinson starting out on that side, regardless of formation.

The American international is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League with 10 assists already - only Mo Salah, on 17, has more.

He did very well to set up the opener for Rodrigo Muniz last season in Fulham’s 3-0 win over Spurs and, in terms of playing style, there are overlapping characteristics with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, who was problematic last weekend.

Spurs can’t afford Robinson similar time and space down the left, while impressive battles with Salah and Bukayo Saka this season have highlighted his defensive strengths too.

Formation switching

Of late, Marco Silva has played three at the back - a move initially made out of necessity at Molineux.

With some absent, Alex Iwobi needing a rest and Willian not quite up to full speed since returning, Silva admitted: "We don’t have other wingers, that is the reality, we don’t have solutions - and that was the first reason we changed the formation."

Reiss Nelson and Harry Wilson both underwent surgery in February for their respective injuries, although Fulham hope to have Adama Traore back after he missed the loss to Brighton last time out. We’ll see if that allows Silva to revert to his preferred 4-2-3-1/4-3-3.

Spurs started with an extremely aggressive press in the reverse meeting earlier this season.

It followed on from the 23/24 encounter of the sides in N17, when Calvin Bassey was forced into loose passes while playing out from the back, which led to both goals in a 2-0 win.

But Ange Postecoglou was left rueing the fact they failed to take the early chance this presented back in December, with Heung-min Son denied by Bernd Leno.

This style was rewarded on Thursday however, when Son shut down AZ Alkmaar’s Wouter Goes to help create Wilson Odobert’s opener.

Spurs' selection

Rodrigo Bentancur returns from suspension and, despite Lucas Bergvall’s compelling performance in the number 6 position, you’d imagine the Uruguayan is restored.

That’s not to say Bergvall necessarily makes way entirely, but Ange Postecoglou has options to reconfigure his midfield.

Brennan Johnson could freshen up the attack having scored against Fulham this season and replace Odobert, despite his two goals on Thursday, given the France U21 international has started the last two.

Mathys Tel, Archie Gray and Destiny Udogie have been used sparingly over the past week so should be sharp.

Meanwhile, does the head coach pair Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven again, after the centre-backs made just their second start together since the end of October in the 3-1 AZ win?
