Cristian Romero helped Argentina to become the first South American nation to book their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday as they thumped Brazil 4-1 on home soil.

In action once again for his nation, Cristian was at the heart of the defence and played the full 90 minutes as La Albiceleste ripped apart their great rivals in Buenos Aires.

The current holders of the World Cup having lifted the coveted prize in Qatar in 2022, Argentina have made light work of their World Cup qualifying league - a mega-league containing all 10 CONMEBOL nations - winning 10 of their 14 games thus far.

With the top six teams in the league guaranteed a place in the tournament, it was with the victory over Brazil that Argentina made certain that they will finish in the top six. Leading the way on 31 points, they now have an eight-point lead over second placed Ecuador and crucially, with just four games to go, a 17-point lead over seventh placed Venezuela.

It took just four minutes for Cristian's nation to take the lead against the Seleção with former Manchester City striker Julian Alavarez opening the scoring at Mâs Monumental Stadium. That advantage was quickly doubled by Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez before Wolves' Matheus Cunha halved the deficit with not even half an hour played.

Yet, Alexis Mac Allister quickly reenforced Argentina's dominance, adding a third eight minutes before half-time with Atletico Madrid's Giuliano Simeone then stepping off the bench to add a fourth.

The game saw Cristian pick up his 42nd international cap.
