“The doctor asked, ‘how’s your pain, from one out of 10?’ I said nine. We went straight to the clinic, had x-rays, the doc called me and said ‘sorry, Vic, I have bad news for you...”

By his own admission, our 4-0 win at Manchester City in November was both one of the best and worst days of Guglielmo Vicario’s life.

All the headlines from a memorable evening at the Etihad came at the top end of the pitch, with a brace from James Maddison and further strikes from Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson handing us a superb victory against the reigning Premier League champions in their own back yard.

But at the other end, Vic was struggling. An innocuous collision with Savinho in the first half left the 28-year-old feeling a problem with his right ankle. Little did he know what was to come.

In the aftermath of the game, we announced that he would need surgery after suffering a fractured ankle. It was a devastating blow, both to himself and to the team.

In an exclusive documentary, entitled ‘The Comeback: Vicario’, the Italian international goalkeeper gives us unprecedented access to the hours and days after his injury, the weeks of rehab and months of anguish he went through as he slowly worked his way back to fitness.

“When I stood up from the ground, I had this feeling in my ankle that it was not stable,” he says, recalling what happened at the Etihad. “The pain was very high. At half-time, I needed some help. I went straight to the (physio) bed, we strapped the ankle but when I put the ankle on the ground, it was very painful again. I had no time to think about the pain. When the game had finished, I went into the dressing room again. It was very, very painful. It’s harsh to say but it was one of the best and one of the worst days of my life.”

I don't think it should ever go unnoticed – he’s played 60 minutes with a broken ankle at the Etihad and kept a clean sheet...

Senior Assistant Coach Matt Wells on Vicario's injury

Senior Assistant Coach Matt Wells recalls: “Vic’s injury was a freak event when it happened. We didn’t think too much of it, it was such an innocuous incident. It wasn’t until we got on the plane and landed that we knew there might be an issue...”

In our must-watch 20-minute feature video, available to watch now for free on SPURSPLAY and across the Club’s digital channels, Vic tells us about flying back to Italy to go under the knife, then, while still on crutches, leads us through his arduous rehabilitation process. We go to his home in London, hear from his mum, see him wincing as his stitches are taken out and find out about a particular book he carried around with him during his recovery time – the autobiography of one of Italy’s greatest ever shot-stoppers and someone he calls an idol.

Be sure to check out ‘The Comeback: Vicario’ as we follow our number one back into training, all the way to his return to action in our 1-0 win over Manchester United last weekend.

“I don't think it should ever go unnoticed – he’s played 60 minutes with a broken ankle at the Etihad and kept a clean sheet...” adds coach Matt – a powerful reminder of Vic’s courage and passion.
