Ashleigh Neville has reached a number of milestones in her remarkable career to date but, when she stepped onto the field at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, she was not just making personal history, but Spurs history!
Named in the starting XI for our north London derby last weekend, the defender made her 100th appearance in the Barclays Women’s Super League and, while it was a personal landmark for ‘Ash’, it also saw her name written into the Club’s history book.
Already one of our longest-serving players in the squad, the 31-year-old became our first player to reach a century of WSL games.
So, to commemorate her milestone appearance, we sat down with Ash to get a sense of her pride in this historic moment.
“I have been at the Club for nearly eight years now and I have kind of seen it grow from what it was when I first came to where we are now,” she said, reflecting on our shared journey to this moment.
“I think we all know that we still have a bit more growth to achieve, but there’s definitely been massive progression at the Club and I’m really proud to be in England’s top flight and to have made 100 appearances – and hopefully there is more to come. It has been a dream come true to play in the WSL.
“It was a great game to reach that milestone - a north London derby. It was obviously a disappointing outcome with the result, but it was still a very proud moment for me.”
It has now been seven-and-a-half years since Ash became a Lilywhite, joining us from Coventry United in July, 2017, after our promotion to FA Women’s Championship.
Having surpassed 150 Club appearances back in March, 2024 – now sitting on 172 – she has created history as she became the very first Spurs player to hit a century in the WSL – an achievement that she attributed to some key people during her time at the Club.
“Obviously, it’s pretty cool to have my name in the history books and to achieve that,” she added.
“There have been players here like Jenna [Schillaci] who was with us for a long time, and now still involved on the academy side, and she would have many appearances, but no one will be able to take that achievement of becoming the first Spurs player to reach 100 WSL appearances away from me.
“It’s a proud moment for me. There are players who I looked up to that were at the Club previously for a long time and paved the pathway for where we are now and for what we have achieved as a team. It’s kind of a thanks to people like Jenna, Karen [Hills] and Juan [Amoros], who used to be here and have helped me achieve that. So, I’m really happy to be in the history books for a Club as big as Spurs - that means a lot to me.”
Going from semi-professional to professional, Ash has been on a unique journey in her career, but hopes she has inspired the next generation and shown that anything can be achieved.
“Back when I was younger, we were in mixed teams or there wasn’t any kind of local girls’ teams. You would probably have to travel quite a lot, but I speak to a lot of the fans now that have younger girls and they have massive opportunities to play football, which is great to see.
“Hopefully, I have been part of that pathway, and I hope I have a lot of people who look up to me and see that’s possible to reach the top, to make 100 appearances in the WSL. It’s a big achievement for myself.”

Making the move from the West Midlands to the capital in 2017, she may have never envisaged the journey she would have been on with the Club.
Being a part of our very first squad in the WSL in the 2019/20 campaign, the full-back has been a consistent performer across our six seasons in the top flight, while being quite a versatile player, having played in both full-back roles.
Now, 31-years-old, Ash has continued to cement her part in our history.
“I definitely couldn’t have envisaged the journey me and the Club have been on in the WSL,” she smiled.
“Then, when we got there, we wondered what it would look like. It was a new chapter for everyone involved at the Club. We became professional and, whether we were going to be able to sustain that or not… yet here we’re six years later in the WSL, and still growing as a team.
“We definitely put our stamp on it, that we’re good enough to be in the league. It’s definitely been a great journey that I have been on with the Club and I’m looking forward to see where we go next.”

"I hope I have a lot of people who look up to me and see that’s possible to reach the top, to make 100 appearances in the WSL."

To celebrate this special milestone, we asked Ash to reflect on some of her favourite moments that have been part of her century of appearances, beginning with our very first game in the WSL in September, 2019.
It was an admirable performance on our debut in the top flight as we fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to champions at the time, Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge, with a goal from Bethany England separating the two sides, and the right-sided full-back looked back on a memorable day in west London.
“I remember this game and I remember that Bethany [England] actually scored,” She recalled. “I think we conceded within about three or four minutes, and I remember looking at Jenna, as she was the centre-back next to me, and I thought this could be a really long day to concede that early in the game.
“The game actually only finished 1-0. There were a lot of supporters and it was a nice sunny day. Obviously, it wasn’t great to lose your first WSL game, but to come in and play the champions Chelsea and only lose 1-0 in your debut game in the WSL was quite good for us.”
What about her favourite game so far?
“I always look back at the Brighton game - I think it’s still our highest-ever win in the WSL, an 8-0 win away from home. That’s always one game that sticks out in my mind,” She said.
“And, although this isn’t the WSL, the FA Cup Final has to be one. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but what an experience to be part of with the Club and the progress it showed for us all. So, these two games are ones that really stick out for me.”

Next up, her favourite goal in the WSL!
Having netted her first goal in a 1-1 draw with Reading in November, 2020, she has gone on to register a further eight goals in this competition to date and her audacious strike at Leicester City in September, 2022, which won Goal of the Season for that campaign, was one that stood out.
“If I had to choose my favourite WSL goal so far, it would have to be the one against Leicester from the half-way line,” she beamed.
“I was playing left-back at the time and Asmita Ale took a throw-in. It came across to me, I took a touch and then I saw the goalkeeper off her line, so I thought I would go for it. It was the first game of the season at the King Power Stadium and to win Goal of the Season in the first game of the campaign is quite special.”
