Michel Vorm is ready to pull on the gloves again as part of our Spurs Legends squad taking on AC Milan Glorie at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 23 March (2pm).
The goalkeeper made 48 appearances for us in all competitions in two spells, initially joining us in July, 2014 and departing after the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final, before returning as cover for Hugo Lloris in October, 2019 for the rest of the 2019/20 season. He retired aged 37 in October, 2020, but he was soon back for a short spell in the role of Interim Interim Goalkeeper Coach in April, 2021.
Michel joins Sebastien Bassong, Dimitar Berbatov, Stephen Carr, Michael Dawson, Jermain Defoe, Heurelho Gomes, Ledley King, Aaron Lennon, Sandro, Teddy Sheringham and Teemu Tainio in the squad for the charity match in aid of the Club’s Foundation.
Michel Vorm
Legacy Number #799, Michel began his career at FC Utrecht, making 162 appearances, including 137 in the Eredivisie, before moving to Swansea City in the Premier League in 2011. Playing alongside Ben Davies, Michel won the League Cup in 2013 before moving to Spurs the following year.
Such a popular member of the squad, Michel brilliantly fulfilled his role as Hugo's understudy, his work in the training field helping to bring the best out of the skipper throughout his time in N17. The Dutch international also played a number of times in that role - 14 appearances in his first season, 11 in 2016/17 and 2017/18, when he also captained the team, made his debut in the UEFA Champions League and played in the semi-final of the FA Cup.
A playing career that started with a debut for FC Ben Bosch, on loan from FC Utrecht, in August, 2005, came to an end with his final appearance for us in the FA Cup against Norwich almost 15 years later.
Capped 15 times by the Netherlands, Michel was a member of the squad that won the UEFA U21 Championship in 2006 and later in Dutch squads for the 2010 World Cup, 2012 European Championship and 2014 World Cup.
Michel summed up his love for the club when he left us in the summer of 2019. “This group of players is special and that photograph of the whole squad together before the start of the Champions League Final... that means a lot.
“I’m so pleased and proud that I’ve been part of it, even if it’s been a different role for me other than being in the starting 11 every week. I’m one of the oldest members of the squad, I have that experience and players would talk to me a lot.
“The journey has been unbelievable, just unbelievable and I’m genuinely going to miss everyone at the Club. After five seasons, that’s more than just the players, that’s all the staff as well, everyone. I started to realise that when I left for holidays. I’ve made a lot of friends at Spurs. That’s something special as well.”
