Matter of stats | Doing the 'double' in the Premier League

Tue 18 February 2025, 14:00|Tottenham Hotspur

On Sunday, our 1-0 victory over Manchester United saw us complete a 'league double' over the Red Devils for the first time in the Premier League era.

Having also run out winners at Old Trafford back in September in season's away fixture with United, we have now beaten them home and away in the same campaign - a 'league double' - for the first time since the Premier League began back in 1992/93.

United are the 45th side we have completed a league double against in the competition to date having faced 50 different opponents.

That means we are yet to achieve this feat against just five clubs - those being Barnsley, Blackpool, Bradford City, Chelsea and Swindon Town.

Of all the teams we have completed a league double over, we have done so the most against Manchester City, defeating them home and away in a league season on nine occasions since 1992. Our next best return is against Aston Villa, who we have completed eight league doubles over in the Premier League era while we have recorded seven 'doubles' over Everton and Crystal Palace.

We have a perfect record against three clubs in the Premier League era having won every game we have played in the competition against Huddersfield Town (four), Cardiff City (four) and Luton Town (two), defeating each of those teams home and away in each season in which they have featured in the Premier League.

We completed our first Premier League double in the competition's first-ever season. That came against Everton, who we defeated 2-1 at White Hart Lane in September, 1992, before managing the same scoreline at Goodison Park in February, 1993.

The most league doubles we have completed in a single season came in the 2015/16 campaign as we secured home and away wins against nine different teams. We finished third that season with 70 points.

Only in one season have we failed to complete a league double over any team. That was in 1997/98 as we finished 13th with 44 points - our lowest ever points tally in a Premier League campaign.

We have already completed a league double over two sides this season. The first being Brentford as we defeated them 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in September before running our 2-0 winners at the Gtech Community Stadium earlier this month. We then added to the list on Sunday with our inaugural 'Premier League double' over United.

It remains possible for us to complete a further four 'league doubles' this season having already defeated West Ham United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Southampton in our first encounters of the campaign.
