Mathys Tel is ready.

Ready for the challenge of playing in the Premier League. Ready for what he describes as ‘a new chapter’ on and off the pitch in what are still the early days of his career, yet, here’s a player whose experience belies his years, including 99 senior games, a Bundesliga title and international success with France Under-17s - all by the age of 20.

It was a well-documented, busy last few days of the Transfer Window for Mathys. An exciting, explosive forward with an eye for goal, he said he ‘felt the commitment’ after speaking to key figures at the Club, convincing him this was the place to be...

"I felt the commitment, I spoke with the President, the team manager, the coach and as I said, that was very important for me"

“Why I chose Tottenham? It was the best option for me. I’m ready to play, I’m here, I’m ready to grow. It was the best option for me and now I’m very happy. I felt the commitment, I spoke with the President, the team manager, the coach and as I said, that was very important for me.”

Mathys also spoke to some familiar names - Harry Kane and Eric Dier, team-mates at FC Bayern, two players with 800 appearances for us and years of knowledge between them. “They said, if you want to work here, you have everything. You can enjoy it. That’s good for me, because it’s a good opportunity to work, to learn every day... that’s what they told me.”

And a good friend, France and now Spurs team-mate, Wilson Odobert, had a simple message. “He told me ‘come, you have to come here’. Wilson, he’s my friend, I’ve played with him with the French team, and he said, ‘come, this is a great team, you will see’. We are good friends. I come from Paris, him too, and we have a good relationship.”

Wearing our lilywhite shirt for the first time at Hotspur Way on Monday night - he will wear number 11 - having put pen to paper on a loan deal from Bayern Munich, subject to international clearance and work permit, with an option to make the move permanent in the summer, Mathys told what he intends to bring to the table. “I’m a physical player, fast. Technical. I play every moment of every game with my heart. I want to bring a lot of energy to the team, I know what I have to do, I know what I have to bring to the team.”

Speaking in English, Mathys was asked to sum up his feelings. “It’s a new challenge for me, a new chapter to open,” he said. “I’m very excited to play with my new team-mates, for the fans, very excited. I’m ready for every game. That’s why I’m here, to bring energy to the team. I’m ready.

"I know what I have to do for Tottenham, for the team, for the fans. I know what I have to do, and I hope I am going to do it.”
