VAR, in-stadium announcements, extra-time and penalties in Carabao Cup semi-final

Here's a look at some of the key details you need to know about Thursday's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg as we take on Liverpool at Anfield.
VAR
VAR (Video Assistant Referee) will once again be in place for the Carabao Cup as we take on Liverpool in the second leg of our semi-final tie at Anfield on Thursday evening (8pm UK). Arsenal face Newcastle in their second leg on Wednesday evening.
As with the first leg, in-stadium VAR announcements will also be in operation. Our 1-0 first-leg win over Liverpool on January 8 saw the first-ever instance of an in-stadium VAR announcement as referee Stuart Attwell explained his decision to rule a Dominic Solanke goal to fans within the bowl.
As part of an ongoing trial, referees will announce (over the stadium public address system) a final decision following a visit to the VAR pitchside monitor, or upon the conclusion of factual matters such as accidental handball by a goalscorer or offside judgements. Only the final decision will be announced in the stadium.
In-stadium VAR announcements have already been successfully introduced in several FIFA events, including the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and aim to provide greater clarity and understanding around key decisions to supporters in the stadiums and those watching from home.
The new pilot forms part of PGMOL’s (Professional Game Match Officials Board) broader commitment to transparency and embracing technological advancements for the benefit of Match Officials and fans. This latest pilot has the support of the EFL and follows earlier collaboration with PGMOL in 2018 to trial VAR in EFL competitions ahead of its introduction in the Premier League.
Extra-time
If the aggregate score across the two legs is level come the end of the regulation 90 minutes at Anfield on Thursday, our clash with the Reds will go to extra-time, seeing an additional 30 minutes played.
Penalty shootout
If a winner can still not be decided after the additional 30 minutes of play, the game will be decided via a penalty shootout.
