Ange Postecoglou has explained his decision to start Heung-Min Son, Dejan Kulusevski and Djed Spence on the bench for our Premier League clash with Manchester City.
The trio are all set to begin our clash with Citizens on Wednesday night amongst our substitutes, with James Maddison, Wilson Odobert and Pedro Porro coming into the starting XI in place of them.
Sonny, Djed and Dejan have played an incredible amount of football for us over the last few months as they have been able to avoid injury over a hectic period of games.
Sonny has played in each of our last 27 games, starting 24 of those.
Deki has not missed a game for us since our 2-2 draw with Manchester United in January, 2024, playing all 59 games for us since in some capacity. In our 41 games so far this, in only 10 of them has he not completed the full 90 minutes.
And Djed, since he was thrust into the team just before Christmas, has played in 14 of the 16 games he has been eligible for.
So, given the amount of minutes the trio have racked up over the last few months, Ange explained that, as he now has players back from injury and can still field a strong team, tonight presents an opportunity to give the three players somewhat of a rest.
"It’s something (the opportunity to rest players) we’ve missed, obviously. I think they will benefit," Ange said. "Those three have played a lot of football in recent times.
"It allows guys like Destiny, Brennan and now Wilson to get up the match minutes after missing a fair bit of football, but without losing sight of the fact that we have a big challenge (ahead of us) tonight and we want a strong team out there."
