Lenna Gunning-Williams: “It was good to get 90 minutes with this team”

Lenna Gunning-Williams has certainly made her mark in our pre-season programme so far.

The 19-year-old grabbed her third goal in pre-season in our 2-0 win over Feyenoord on Wednesday afternoon, having scored twice in a behind-closed-doors friendly against London City Lionesses last month.

The young forward, who was a constant threat throughout our clash with the Eredivisie Vrouwen side, broke the deadlock in the second half, guiding home Elkie Bowyer’s cross into the bottom corner, before midfielder Olga Ahtinen doubled our advantage in the closing stages.

Following a season at Ipswich Town last term, where she scored 14 goals in 26 appearances, alongside a positive pre-season in our colours, Lenna feels she has finally made that transition from academy graduate to senior player.

“It was really good to get 90 minutes with this team, I think, I could have done better personally in the final third, especially with the build-ups we were doing but I’m happy to get a goal at the end of it,” she told SPURSPLAY after the game.

When reflecting on her stepping up to the first team, Lenna added: “Having come through the academy and started training with the first team a couple of seasons ago, everyone has been welcoming.

“These environments can be tough as a younger player but everyone here, including the staff, have helped me progress and I feel now, especially after my loan spell, I’m finally becoming a senior player.”

Robert Vilahamn’s side have one final pre-season fixture against Manchester United on Sunday before they kick off their 2024/25 Barclays Women’s Super League campaign at home to Crystal Palace – tickets still available to buy – and Lenna is looking forward to getting started.

“The WSL is one of the best leagues in the world, so just being in and around with such a top team in this league is exciting stuff, and we are just all ready for the season to start now.”
