'Sonny texted me about my Celtic worldie' - catching up with former Spurs man Kevin Wimmer

Thu 26 September 2024, 11:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Former Spurs man Kevin Wimmer went viral last week as he scored a stunner in the UEFA Champions League - and he has revealed his good-friend Sonny was one of the first people to message him about it.

A defender who spent two years with us between 2015 and 2017 and who made his debut for the Club against tonight's (Thursday 26 September) opponents Qarabag, we spoke to Kevin in a fascinating exclusive interview, which you can read in full in Official Matchday Programme, on a range of topics including that goal and his pal Sonny.

Having arrived in N17 in the same summer as Sonny, and with both of them fluent in the German language, the pair quickly struck up a strong connection, and that is something which remains strong to this day.

So, when Kevin hit international headlines for his trivela goal against Celtic in the Champions League last Wednesday, as soon as Sonny saw his central defensive mate produce such a strike under the lights, he was quick to text him about it.

We always try to speak as much as possible and he’s still one of my best friends.

“I still have very good contact with Sonny,” the centre-back said. “We speak quite a lot – especially after my goal in the Champions League, he texted me about that.

"We still have a very good relationship and I always try to see him as much as possible, but of course it’s not always so easy because we both have a very busy schedule and he also has the national team. But we always try to speak as much as possible and he’s still one of my best friends.”
