Sonny inspires South Korea to victory in Oman

Tue 10 September 2024, 18:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son scored and claimed two assists as Korea earned their first win of third round qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.

Taking on Oman in Muscat, Sonny first provided an assist for Wolves' Hwang Hee-chan to open the scoring on 10 minutes before Korea were pegged back by their hosts before the break.

Having drawn their opening qualifier with Palestine though, a win was much needed and so, in their hour of need, captain Sonny stepped up with a stunning strike to see Korea on their way to their first three points.

Coming with just eight minutes remaining at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, our number seven picked the ball up on the edge of the area before whipping home fiercely from the edge of the area to seal the win for his nation. Sonny completed another international to remember by setting up Joo Min-kyu's goal for 3-1 in the 11th minute of added time.

That was goal number 49 for Sonny of his international career and cap number 129.

On Thursday, the forward edged past former Spurs man Lee Young-pyo in Korea's all-time appearance list.

Yang Min-Hyeok, who signed for us in July but is finishing the season with Gangwon FC before linking up us in January, appeared in the matchday squad for the Korea National team for the first time.

On Monday, Sonny's second strike in our 4-0 win over Everton was named your Goal of the Month.
