Old Trafford performance sees our Premier League XG record broken

We broke our record for expected goals (XG) for a Premier League match in Sunday's 3-0 win over Manchester United.
Dominating proceedings at the 'Theatre of Dreams', we produced one of our most-complete displays of the season to defeat the Red Devils on their own patch for the first time in almost four years.
Getting ourselves in front with less than three minutes on the clock as Brennan Johnson tapped home after Micky van de Ven's mesmerising marauding run, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke later provided goals from close range to seal a well-deserved three points.
However, despite the comfortable scoreline, it would be fair to say it could have been so much more cosy as we had a gluttony of chances to really put the game out of sight in the 90 minutes, but were unable to capitalise.

And, thanks to our friends at Opta, that dominance was clear to see in the game's expected goals metric as we produced a record-breaking 4.59xg - our highest-ever return since the metric was introduced to top-flight coverage.
Breaking it down, the expected goals metric measure the value of a chance in a match, essentially how likely a player is to score from that position.
For example, Brennan Johnson's opener in the third minute as given an expected goals measurement of 0.915 which, if a goal equates to 1.0, it is expected a player in that position would 91.5 times our of 100, score the goal.
Whereas, in the case of Dejan Kulusevski's goal, that was given a measurement of 0.338 which suggests it was a much harder opportunity to score with. That is because things like where the effort was taken from and the height of the ball at the point of contact would have been taken into account and thus only on 33.8 times out of 100 would a player with the same opportunity be expected to score.
Of all of our shots on goal - 24 to be exact - each of those received a measurement and, when all added together, a measurement of 4.59xg - our biggest-ever xg return in the Premier League.
That return broke our previous record of 3.81xg which we recorded in our 4-1 win over Newcastle United back in December, 2023.
Below are our top 10 returns in terms of xg in the Premier League since the metric was introduced, five of which have come under Ange Postecoglou, including two already this campaign.
