Newcastle 2-1 Spurs | Ange's verdict: "We certainly should have got more out of the game"

Ange Postecoglou was left with a sense of deja-vu after another dominant performance on the road went unrewarded as we suffered a 2-1 loss at Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday.

The stats tell the story - 66 per cent possession, 20 efforts to nine in our favour - but the home side took the points when Jacob Murphy broke clear and rolled into the path of Alexander Isak to tap home the winner on 78 minutes.

That goal came after our best spell where we’d levelled Harvey Barnes’ opener - Dan Burn turning Brennan Johnson’s shot into his own net on 56 minutes - Nick Pope denied Pedro Porro and James Maddison, Porro struck the woodwork, Wilson Odobert volleyed over from close range, and Johnson fired over from 12 yards – and that doesn’t take into account the number of times we were able to get at Newcastle’s defence, usually after winning possession.

The performance wasn’t dissimilar to how we played for the first hour of our season opener when we were pegged back for a draw by Leicester City having dominated at the KP.

It's a good performance, some good football, some strong individual performances as well, and we’ve got to keep banging on that door

Speaking to SPURSPLAY, Ange said: “It’s similar to our first away game, we certainly should have got more out of the game than we have. Again, it was a tale of controlling the game for the most part, creating a number of chances and not taking advantage.

“It’s not an easy place to come to, the supporters create a strong atmosphere for the home side and you have ride that tide, and I thought we did. There were very few times where I felt we were under siege, and we played the game in their half.

“Like I said, with the amount of chances we created we should have got something out of it. It wasn’t just the 20 efforts, there were more times where we could have tested the goalkeeper even more, so, as I said, it’s been a little bit of a tale of our season so far, but it’s a good performance, some good football, some strong individual performances as well, and we’ve got to keep banging on that door.”
