Matter of stats | Our League Cup record against the Sky Blues

Wed 18 September 2024, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

We've won three of our five ties against Coventry City in the League Cup as we prepare to meet for the sixth time in the competition at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Wednesday evening (8pm UK).

The most recent League Cup clash between the sides came in September, 2003 when Rohan Ricketts scored one of only two goals he netted in our colours in a 3-0 second round win at City’s old Highfield Road stadium, where Fredi Kanoute and Robbie Keane were also on target.

Back in October 1995, it was City who advanced after a spirited fightback in the third round fixture on their own patch. We’d taken a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to an own goal from David Busst and one from Chris Armstrong, but were pegged back after Peter Ndlovu netted and Busst scored at the right end. Our fate was sealed by a John Salako winner with 15 minutes remaining.

Goals from Gordon Durie and Paul Allen saw us progress at Coventry’s expense in the fourth round in December 1991 - Paul Furlong on target for the Sky Blues at Highfield Road.

The first two League Cup meetings between the sides both came at White Hart Lane. The first was way back in the 1970/71 season en route to Spurs winning the trophy as we overcame City 4-1 in round five thanks mainly to a Martin Chivers hat-trick with Alan Gilzean also netting. However, a third round meeting in N17 in 1977/78 ended in disappointment as we exited the competition after a 3-2 defeat with John Pratt and Gerry Armstrong our scorers.

Coventry - managed by Mark Robins - knocked out Bristol City and Oxford United to reach this season’s third round, while they currently sit 14th in the Championship table with one win from their opening five games, also against Oxford.
