Three goals and three points on memorable day at Old Trafford

Manchester United 0-3 Spurs

Sun 29 September 2024, 18:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke all struck as we romped to a 3-0 win at 10-man Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Leading inside three minutes thanks to an incredible 70-yard run from Micky van de Ven to set up Johnson for the opener - the latter's fourth goal in four games - we pushed on to enjoy another one of those joyous, memorable matches at Old Trafford.

The superb Kulusevski netted a deft second for us just after half-time, capitalising after United had been reduced to 10 men in the latter moments of the first period after a straight red card for captain Bruno Fernandes, before Solanke made it three goals in as many appearances on a personal level to round off the victory on what was our 100th competitive match at the home of the Red Devils.

We lined up in the north west without captain Heung-Min Son after he was forced off against Qarabag on Thursday night but we quickly hit the front thanks to a moment of sheer brilliance from defender van de Ven. With just over two minutes played, the Netherlands international intercepted the ball deep in our half as Marcus Rashford nudged it in the direction of team-mate Alejandro Garnacho before taking off on a piercing solo run that saw him drive into space between players and get all the way to the byline before squaring across the box for the arriving Johnson to gleefully tap in at the far post.

We remained on the front foot and in truth should have scored more as we swarmed all over United at times. James Maddison was denied by Andre Onana after a great one-two with Kulusevski, Destiny Udogie fired over and Johnson hit the far post with a trademark low right-angled shot, although the hosts almost snatched an equaliser when we temporarily went down to 10 men due to treatment required for Udogie as they attacked the space left by the full-back's absence, but Joshua Zirkzee's effort from the resulting cut-back was well saved down to his right by Guglielmo Vicario.

Still we probed for more, Cristian Romero's acrobatic volley from Pedro Porro's right-wing delivery zipping just wide while Timo Werner was denied one-on-one by Onana, although United still carried the occasional threat and in between those attempts, Garnacho's back-post volley hit the post. A key moment arrived on 42 minutes, though, as Maddison was brought down by a high challenge from Fernandes and the United skipper was shown a straight red card by referee Chris Kavanagh.

That left United ripe for the picking in the second half and we duly took advantage, Johnson breaking down the right and seeing his cross deflect up off the covering Mathijs De Ligt for Kulusevski to beautifully guide the ball over Onana with his left leg and double our advantage just two minutes into the second period.
Onana later denied Werner again as he burst through on goal, subsequently thwarting Solanke on the follow-up, before the hosts rallied during their best spell of the game, forcing a number of set-pieces while Casemiro dragged a shot across goal and just wide from a very tight angle on the right.

However, we made a triple change to maintain control and two of the players introduced made an immediate impact with their respective first touches to set up Solanke for the the goal 13 minutes from time, Lucas Bergvall's corner flicked on by the head of Pape Matar Sarr for the striker to instinctively prod home. Solanke was denied another one by Onana in stoppage time, Sarr nodding the rebound wide, while teenager Mikey Moore curled just off-target right at the end as we ended the game as we started it - firmly on the front foot.

Team news saw Ange Postecoglou make seven changes from the Europa League outing in midweek and just one from our last Premier League match against Brentford, as Son's unavailability gave an opportunity to Werner.
