Maddison your Player of the Match after Brentford victory

Mon 23 September 2024, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

James Maddison has claimed the HSBC Player of the Match award after he spearheaded our charge to three points against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Enjoying a fine start to the campaign, the midfielder came top of our Player of the Match poll hosted exclusively on our Official App to claim his second such award of the season already.

At the heart of everything good about our performance in the London derby, 'Madders' played a crucial role in our early equaliser as it was his parried shot which Dominic Solanke tucked away for his first Spurs goal, cancelling our Bryan Mbeumo's opener on eight minutes.

He then provided the 'pre-assist' for Brennan Johnson's strike midway through the first half, playing the ball onto Sonny before our Skipper released Brennan down the right.

And then, in the final stages of the game, our number 10's performance was finally rewarded with a goal as he clipped home from inside the box on his weaker foot to open his account for the season and get us back to winning ways in the Premier League.

And it was not just his goal involvements which highlighted his influence on the game. The midfielder also enjoyed the greatest share of possession of any single player in the game, with a 5.9 per cent share. Only Destiny Udogie (93) had more touches of the ball than Madders (87) in the game and, of those who started, only Micky van de Ven (90 per cent) enjoyed a better pass completion rate (88 per cent). James also played three key passes in the game (only Heung-Min Son managed more (seven)), while he succeeded in seven take ons - six more than any other Spurs player.
