Derby stories

Aaron Lennon

Aaron Lennon played in 18 north London derbies, spanning nine years - the first at the Lane in October, 2005, his last off the bench in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates in September, 2014.

As you'd expect of the famous old fixture, there were highs and lows for 'Azza' in almost a decade of N17-N5 rivalry, from goals in one of our most remarkable derby displays in recent history to the late, late leveller in one of the most storied clashes, semi-final joy and heartbreak, wins and defeats...

In a special interview in this Sunday's official matchday programme, Aaron, now 37, who made 367 appearances for us between 2005-2015, looks back at the derbies that left an indelible mark on him...

"I remember thinking, 'wow, this feels different to any other game'. It was so loud."

Spurs 1-1 Arsenal

"I remember coming out for the warm-up that day and the atmosphere was amazing. I remember thinking ‘wow, this feels different to any other game’. It was so loud. I obviously knew Tottenham-Arsenal is a big rivalry and you hear other players tell you about what it’s like to be a part of the derby. But it’s only when you play in the game that you truly appreciate how massive it is."

"I remember scoring the fourth goal on the night... that was the one when you thought, 'okay, we’re through'..."

Spurs 5-1 Arsenal
League Cup semi-final, second leg
22 January, 2008

"That’s right up there with one of the top five matches I was involved with during my Spurs career. It was one of those where we were absolutely on fire that night and the Lane was rocking. Arsenal couldn’t cope with us that night and the most important thing was that we got the club through to its first final in quite some time. To then go on and win the trophy made that victory over Arsenal even more special. I remember scoring the fourth goal on the night - Keano (Robbie Keane) played me through. That was the one when you thought, ‘okay, we’re through’. At 3-0 up, there’s still a small chance of a comeback, but 4-0 up, it was game over!"

"It was honestly one of the best feelings I ever had in football..."

Arsenal 4-4 Spurs
Premier League
29 October, 2008

"I get asked about that game all the time. It was one of those bonkers games. Bents (David Bentley) scored early on from nearly the halfway line. When someone scores a goal like that, you think ‘this is going to be our day’. But we found ourselves 4-2 down, with a few minutes to go. We were the sort of team that never thought we were out of a game though, even if time wasn’t on our side. JJ (Jermaine Jenas) scored a really good goal to give us a chance. For me to get the tap in at the end and make it 4-4, it was honestly one of the best feelings I ever had in football. It’s hard to put into words a moment like that... hearing the crowd, the celebrations. It was a special night."

"I jumped up and I knew I shouldn’t have because my hamstring was killing me, but I couldn’t help myself!"

Spurs 2-1 Arsenal
Premier League
14 April, 2010

"Danny Rose was like my little brother at Spurs, having joined us from Leeds as a youngster like I did. I was injured for that game and I was watching on the sidelines. I remember when Danny hit that shot, I jumped up and I knew I shouldn’t have because my hamstring was killing me, but I couldn’t help myself! What a goal it was. He caught it so sweetly, it nearly took the net off. Again, the atmosphere from that night is something that stays with me. Hearing the roar when that goal went in…it was just phenomenal. Something always happened in the north London derby when I was at Spurs. They were always amazing games and one of my favourite fixtures to play in as a footballer without doubt."
