Coventry vs Spurs | Form guide ahead of Carabao Cup clash

Wed 18 September 2024, 11:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Despite winning just one of their opening five league fixtures, Coventry City come into tonight's fixture having picked up two wins and two clean sheets to date in the Carabao Cup.

Ellis Simms settled a tough first round tie against Bristol City at Ashton Gate, as his 65th minute strike was the only goal separating the sides that evening.

And despite a five-goal thriller between the sides in their league meeting, the Sky Blues edged out Oxford United at the Coventry Building Society (CBS) Arena thanks to Brandon Thomas-Asante's deflected effort back at the end of August.

City will pose a threat this evening, famously taking Manchester United all the way to penalties in last season's FA Cup Semi Final.

The last five...

16 August - Championship - Coventry City 3-2 Oxford United (Wright (2) & Van Ewijk)
24 August - Championship - Bristol City 1-1 Coventry City (Palmer)
27 August - Carabao Cup - Coventry City 1-0 Oxford United (Thomas-Asante)
31 August - Championship - Coventry City 0-1 Norwich City
14 September - Championship - Watford 1-1 Coventry City (Simms)

Mark Robins' side responded to an opening day defeat to Stoke with back-to-back wins, which began in the Carabao Cup, edging Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Kasey Palmer created the first chance for the Sky Blues, winning the ball back after pressing the Robins' midfield, but his effort went wide, whilst Victor Torp also saw his effort from the edge of the box deflected wide.

Goalkeeper Ben Wilson had to make a double save to deny both Nahki Wells and Sam Bell before the interval.

After the break Brandon Thomas-Asante's long range shot was saved before Palmer played a through ball to substitute Ellis Simms at the edge of the area, who fired home the winner.

The Sky Blues then picked up their second win in three days with a late, late win over Oxford United at the CBS in the Championship.

City were pegged back twice, taking the lead thanks to Haji Wright's back post header in the 15th minute, only for Ciaron Brown to level it seven minutes later.

Wright then played a superb ball across the edge of the box to Milan Van Ewijk, who fired home a neat finish into the bottom left corner to restore the lead, only to see it cancelled out by a close range finish from Mark Harris.

But with 96 minutes on the clock, United gave the ball away in their own half, a gift for Wright who charged through the defensive line and took it around the goalkeeper to tuck home the winner.

You'd have forgiven the Coventry fans for thinking it was Groundhog Day, as their next two games were a trip to Ashton Gate, followed by Oxford at home, however this time the competitions were reversed, with the former in the Championship, and the latter a Carabao Cup tie.

George Tanner opened the scoring for Bristol City in first half stoppage time with a superb volley from 20 yards out, but Kasey Palmer cancelled it out with 14 minutes to play.

City then beat Oxford for the second time in 11 days at the CBS, and nearly took a very early lead when Liam Kitching's header thundered off the crossbar from an in-swinging corner, and Brandon Thomas-Asante fired wide from 10 yards out.

Thomas-Asante then got himself on the scoresheet 10 minutes into the second half, taking aim from outside the area and a big deflection from United defender Peter Kioso looped it over a stranded Matt Ingram, the only goal separating the sides that evening.

However City are winless since that game, with Borja Sainz's goal enough to earn Norwich City all three points at the CBS before the international break.

Simms fired an early chance wide and Wright forced a strong save from Angus Gunn in the first half, and Ephron Mason-Clark also had an effort saved in the second half, but the Canaries picked up their first league win of the season.

Whilst last weekend saw City take an early lead at Vicarage Road, with Simms heading them ahead from a corner just four minutes in, and Mason-Clark should've doubled the lead from close range in the first half.

But Mark Robins' side were pegged back just half the hour mark as Tom Dele-Bashiru's close range finish, before City were denied by the woodwork, with Wright's diving header bouncing back off the far post late on.

This leaves Coventry 14th in the Championship table, with five points from their opening five games, four points off the Play-Off places, and just two points above the bottom three.
