Chris Hughton: "I like Ange very much, I feel positivity, a connection"

Fri 20 September 2024, 17:55|Tottenham Hotspur

Chris Hughton was back 'home' for our 4-0 win against Everton in August - and has declared himself a big fan of Ange Postecoglou and how we're 'moving in the right direction'.

A Spurs legend in every way, Chris signed professional forms in 1979 after initially training with us as a junior, starting a 25-year journey at the Club split into 11 years as a player until moving to West Ham in 1990, then another 14 as a coach and assistant manager until 2007.

A flying full-back, Chris made 398 appearances in all competitions, winning two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup in the glory days of the early 1980s under Keith Burkinshaw. Since departing in 2007, he's managed Newcastle United, Birmingham, Norwich, Brighton, Forest and, most recently Ghana's national team.

In-between leaving us for West Ham in 1990 and returning as Under-21s manager in 1993, Chris also spent time at Brentford, his final club, in 1992/93, so we caught up with him in our official matchday programme for our Premier League clash against The Bees at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (3pm UK).

Here's what Chris had to say about the current Spurs side under Ange - you can read the full interview in the programme - available online here - and we'll also run it in full early next week.

What do you make of this current Spurs team?

Chris: "I was at the Spurs-Everton game back in August, which I really enjoyed. First and foremost with Ange’s Spurs, you’ll get entertainment. I know how important that is to the supporters of the club with the traditions we have. I like the Head Coach very much. He is a determined individual and he has a particular way of playing. We have seen the success that has brought him up at Celtic etc. With the open style of play and the high line Spurs adopt, that obviously carries some risk, but that’s Ange’s game, which he is confident in and which the supporters love. I am confident he’ll bring success to Tottenham. It won’t be easy because the competition the other clubs bring is immense, but you can see what is being developed at Spurs and everything is moving in the right direction. When I’ve been to watch Spurs under Ange, you sense a positivity and a connection there. The fans are engaged and there is a good feeling towards the team. Winning games is the most important thing in football of course, but having that connection is very important too."
