Timo talks City win, his goal, confidence, support and says: “I can score many more...”

The feeling of goodwill towards Timo Werner on his return to the scoresheet was palpable after he provided an electric start to our Carabao Cup victory against Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

It’s no secret that the pacy German forward has had his demons in front of goal in recent weeks but that was all put behind him with a clinical finish to a wonderful move to open the scoring with only five minutes on the clock at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That move started in our penalty area with Guglielmo Vicario and passed through Cuti Romero and Archie Gray down our right before Brennan Johnson’s flick around the corner sent Deki Kulusevski clear. Deki looked to see Dominic Solanke and Timo racing towards City's penalty area and delivered an inch-perfect pass for Timo to slot home first time.

Our second goal was equally impressive as we played a short corner out to Pape Matar Sarr, who swept home a curler from 25 yards, a brilliant strike. City replied just before the break through Matheus Nunes and the second half was end-to-end with chances to both teams - we certainly carved out the better chances, Timo fired inches wide, Stefan Ortaga denied Brennan - and we stayed strong defensively, with City closest to levelling when Yves Bissouma reacted brilliant to clear Nico O'Reilly’s effort off the line.

Timo joined us on the Review Show afterwards - here’s what he had to say…

Congratulations Timo, how do you feel?

Timo: “Yes, very pleased. It was a tough game today, so to score a goal after a tough week for me was also very nice, especially to have it at home. I think that's always more special than to score somewhere else, but a goal is a goal and it was important for me, but also for the team.”

Take us into that Timo. It's been a little bit of a tough period for you… how much does it mean to score and to get a reaction like that?

Timo: “Yes, a lot, especially how the crowd reacted. I don’t think it was that they said, ‘finally he did it’, it was more like also relief from them to me. They say, ‘yeah, we saw that he that he will do it one day’, and finally I can do it. That says the hard work at the end brought the success, and I have to continue with that, no matter what's coming up.”

Timo, can you take us into the goal? What was it like when the ball was running to you, and what was going through your mind?

Timo: “First of all, when I saw us break up the right side, I wanted to be as fast as possible in this area, because it was especially this area that the manager said before the game where we should be. In the end, it was exactly that area where it ended up, and having this chance. When you have tough weeks as I had and you come in this position, and you’ve missed some opportunities exactly around these kinds of situations, you are a bit nervous, but I wanted to score and I think I see that. When I watched the goal back at half-time, it was with much more confidence, the shot and, yeah, I wanted to score this goal.”

You nearly scored one of the goals of the season in the second half - that was inches wide!

Timo: “I saw in the game how close it was! After the first goal, I mean… you can't have everything! To miss chances and then score twice against City! But some days it goes in, sometimes not. It was the same as the goal, it was with a lot of trust in me, in myself, in my pace, in my finishing.”

It’s not lost here all the hard work you put in, Timo. You are making the runs every single game to put yourself in the right position to give you and he team opportunities - is that something you've tried to maintain in your mind?

Timo: “To be honest, when you are a striker and don't score, you think too much in front of the goal, but I never think about doing the runs to come into the situation. I think it would be stupid to stop those runs only because of being scared to score. That’s what my strengths are, that's why I scored a lot of goals in my career in the past, exactly from these situations. If I keep on going with this mentality, being more confident in front of goal, I think I can score many more goals.”
