It was a night to remember for Clare Hunt as she grabbed her first-ever senior international goal for Australia on Monday evening.
The defender opened her account for her country in the final quarter of the game to inspire the Matildas to a 2-1 win over Germany – securing their first win over the Olympic Bronze Medallists in 19 years.
Clare, who has featured in our opening five games of the 2024/25 campaign, rose highest at the back post to head home Stephanie Catley’s corner from close-range on her 26th cap for her nation.

When she was asked to recall the moment she headed home her first goal on the international stage, she explained on their official Matildas X account: “I just went up for a set piece, as I normally do, but they weren’t marking as tightly on that one.
“Then I just had an opportunity at the back post. I’m glad I took it!
“It feels pretty good. I’m proud of everyone,” she said after the match.
Asked about her country’s famous win over Germany, she added: “I think we put up a decent fight. We absorbed their pressure a lot in the first half, and even in the second.
“The players that came on made an enormous difference, so that was really good for us, and I think we just had momentum moving into the second half. It was good to get the win.”
