'I was very emotional' - Spence recalls moment he signed for Spurs

Djed Spence has opened up on the ‘tears of joy’ he experienced when hearing the news about signing for Spurs in 2022.

Heading into his third season at the Club since his move from Middlesbrough, the 24-year-old - who penned a one-year contract extension on a deal that now runs until 2028 earlier this month - returned from his third loan spell away hungry to prove a point this season.

After scoring in a 5-1 win over Scottish side Hearts in our pre-season opener, the full-back delivered an impressive showing throughout the summer and was rewarded by Ange Postecoglou with a place in our Premier League opening day squad at Leicester City, making a substitute appearance in the closing stages.

With his previous top-flight involvement coming as an unused substitute against Aston Villa on 1 January 2023, it was a long time coming for the dynamic defender who has had to remain patient for opportunities but repaid some faith with a game-changing performance to help us progress in the Carabao Cup third round at Coventry City in September.

Introduced at half-time with it goalless and then falling behind to our Championship opponent on 63 minutes, Djed started and finished the superb team move that brought his first competitive goal for the Club and, crucially, our equaliser two minutes from time before Brennan Johnson’s stoppage-time winner completed the dramatic turnaround.

Speaking in an exclusive interview in our Matchday Programme ahead of tonight's clash with Manchester City in the Carabao Cup last 16, Djed opened up on the emotions he first felt when he heard the news he had signed and went on to make his ambitions clear about wanting to help win something here.

"I cried when I first heard the news that I was going to sign for the Club," he revealed.

"The journey is never easy, so when you get to a big stage in your career when you're signing for a club of the size of Tottenham, it felt like all the hard work to get to that point had paid off but I was very emotional with tears of joy.

"To summarise my time here, it's been difficult, but I’m by no means finished and I feel like the best is yet to come.

"My ambition is to win something, of course. That's the team's goal, that's the manager's goal so I want to win something here.

"It could be Carabao Cup, Premier League, FA Cup or Europa League, you never say no to anything, and as long as you're in the competition you always have a chance of winning."

This is a small preview of Djed's exclusive interview which features in full in the Matchday Programme for our Carabao Cup clash against City this evening.
