League goals return best in 59 years

Never before in the Premier League era have we scored more goals at this stage of the season than this campaign.

Since the formation of the Premier League in 1992/93, our 27 goals from our opening 12 games is our best return at this stage of a season to date (2.25 goals per game).

We currently sit at the top of the scoring charts as well, three ahead of league leaders Liverpool, who have scored 24 so far.

Only four times in the Premier League era have we scored 24 goals or more at this stage of a season and 50 per cent of those returns have come under Ange Postecoglou - Harry Redknapp (2011/12 - 26) and Jose Mourinho (2020/21 - 24) are the other two instances.

Our best return in the competition before this term was under Redknapp back in 2011/12, when we hit 26 goals in our opening 12 games. However, in that campaign, our goals per game rate dropped after that opening spell (from 2.16 goal p/g in the first 12 matches to 1.53 goals p/g in the final 26 matches) as we only went on to score a further 40 goals that campaign as we finished in the top four for just the second time since 1992.

Interestingly, in our best goalscoring campaign to date in the Premier League, 2016/17, we scored only 18 in our opening 12 games (1.5 goals p/g) but went on to hit 68 in our final 26 matches (2.6 goals p/g) to register 86 goals in total and finish in our highest ever position (second) and with our highest ever points tally (86) in the Premier League.

And, to be fair to the 2009/10 season, in which we scored a commendable 23 goals in our opening 12 matches, our 13th game of that campaign saw us welcome Wigan Athletic to White Hart Lane and we would record our biggest ever Premier League win in that match - a 9-1 thrashing - which made it 32 goals in our opening 13 games...

Going further back than the Premier League era and you would have to go back to the days of the late great Bill Nicholson and the start of the 1956/66 season - 59 years ago - for a better goals record as, in the first 12 games of that season, we scored 30 goals.
