Internationals | Dream night for Ben and Brennan as Wales top UEFA Nations League group

Ben Davies wore the captain's armband and Brennan Johnson played a huge role as everything went right on the night for Wales in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday evening.

Brennan claimed an assist for the second goal and scored the third as a 4-1 victory over Iceland secured top spot in League B, Group 4 with Turkey suffering a surprise 3-1 loss against Montenegro.

That means not only that Wales are promoted back into the top tier of League A for the next edition of the tournament, but there is also the added bonus of a potential play-off spot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as back up if their qualifying campaign doesn't quite go to plan.

Things weren't quite going to plan for Ben and Brennan early on though in a must-win match for both teams in Cardiff as Iceland grabbed the lead via Andri Gudjohnsen - son of former Spur, Eidur - after just seven minutes. However, Wales clawed their way back and a double from Swansea striker Liam Cullen, the second assisted via a fine cross from Brennan, saw Wales 2-1 up at the break.

News quickly filtered through that Montenegro were beating Turkey 2-1 at half-time and it was party time in the Welsh capital when Brennan finished clinically for 3-1 on 65 minutes, quickly followed by news that Nikola Krstovic had completed a hat-trick and made it 3-1 to Montenegro. Harry Wilson then made it 4-1 to Wales, Montenegro held on and having survived a last-minute penalty to avoid defeat in Turkey on Saturday, Wales leapfrogged Turkey to take top spot in the group.

That was Brennan's fifth goal for Wales in 33 caps, and his ninth for club and country this season, having bagged in six successive games for us in September/October. It was Ben's 92nd cap, taking him level with legendary goalkeeper Neville Southall.
