Internationals | Bentancur's Uruguay win in dramatic fashion
Sat 16 November 2024, 11:00|Tottenham Hotspur
Rodrigo Bentancur returned for Uruguay as they needed a late, late winner to beat Colombia 3-2 overnight in CONMEBOL qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Trailing to Juan Fernando Quintero’s free-kick just after the half-hour mark, La Celeste turned the game around in three second-half minutes through an own goal from former Spur Davinson Sanchez and Rodrigo Aguirre’s tidy finish on 60 minutes.
The away side looked to have stolen a point when Andres Gomez equalised in the sixth minute of stoppage time but there was time for more late drama as Manuel Ugarte fired in the winner in the 101st minute to spark jubilant scenes in the Estadio Centenario in Uruguay's capital of Montevideo.
That victory moves Marcelo Bielsa’s side into second place above Colombia on goal difference and just three points behind leaders Argentina – who fell to a 2-1 defeat to Paraguay on Friday.
Rodrigo played the full 90 on his 65th cap for his nation who now travel to Brazil for a mouth-watering tie in Salvador in the early hours of Wednesday morning (kick-off 12.45am UK).
