"Galatasaray are amongst the early Europa League pacesetters and sit top of the Turkish Süper Lig table, unbeaten. They boast one of continent’s best strikers and thrilled last season to win at Manchester United..."

All out attack

In the 23/24 Champions League, Okan Buruk’s side went all-out attack, winning 3-2 at Old Trafford before a 3-3 group stage draw in Istanbul against United weeks later.

A stand-out summer 2023 recruitment drive, signing Mauro Icardi, Hakim Ziyech and Wilfried Zaha amongst others, saw them lean into their attacking strengths in a 4-2-3-1 system.

Despite only narrowly losing home and away to Bayern (scoring in both games), and drawing 2-2 at home to Copenhagen, their cavalier approach wasn’t enough to earn them a place in the round of 16.

But it did see them pick up 102 points to win the domestic title - a record tally.

The squad reshaped

Despite that success, Galatasaray reshaped their squad in the summer.

Former Spurs pair Tanguy Ndombele and Carlos Vinicius saw loan spells come to end, although Davinson Sanchez remains crucial at centre-back and scored in a recent win over rivals Besiktas.

Zaha headed to Lyon on loan, but the biggest summer departure was winger Kerem Aktürkoğlu, having got 15 goals and 9 assists last season.

His quality drew the attention of Benfica, where he’s been scoring regularly in their Champions League campaign.

A squad in shape

With attacking talent heading out the door, Galatasaray pounced to loan in one of the world’s best centre-forwards, Victor Osimhen, in early September.

The Nigerian is strong, quick and an exceptional finisher, scoring 26 goals in Napoli’s 22/23 title winning season.

The Serie A side seemed intent on cashing in during the summer, but a sale wasn’t forthcoming.

By the end of the window, manager Antonio Conte had already signed Romelu Lukaku, meaning Gala could swoop for Osimhen - who has four goals in five league games already.

It adds to the firepower they already had which includes Icardi (32 goals last season), and Michy Batshuayi.

Plus there’s Dries Mertens. Now 37 years old, the technically gifted Belgian scored 12 and assisted 19 in the 2023/24 campaign.

Out of possession

Okan Buruk has tried to get Icardi and Osimhen in to the same team, experimenting with a 3-4-1-2 formation against Elfsborg.

Mertens played behind the front two - a team selection that brought the kind of game you’d expect, as Galatasaray won 4-3.

All three linked up for the opening goal, with Osimhen making a smart run in to the channel, before bringing others in to play.

Usually out of possession, they press in a 4-4-2 shape with Mertens getting up alongside the striker to go after the centre-backs.

It’s crucial, in the feverish atmosphere of Rams Park, that Spurs’ defenders stay composed when playing out.

While still unbeaten in the league though, Galatasaray suffered defeats home and away to Young Boys in a shock Champions League play-off defeat.

Spurs' match ready squad

Spurs have made 6, 7 and 9 changes to their starting XI for the three Europa League matches so far.

Injuries may alter the extent to which Ange Postecoglou feels he can change his team tonight, but he believes the additional fixtures have helped the whole squad.

“Radu (Dragusin)’s played left centre-back, right centre-back, Ben (Davies)’s come in,” said the head coach after Sunday’s win.

“That’s why these guys work hard, and where Europe’s helped us this year, because Ben comes in with game form, Radu comes in and he has game form, that’s where it helps us and we’re going to need it.”

It certainly feels that way.  A tough trip in Istanbul, less than 72 hours before a home game with Ipswich, will push Postecoglou’s side before the international break.
