Preview | Must-win in Wiltshire for our Under-21s

Tue 05 November 2024, 14:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Another away day awaits for our Under-21s, as they travel to Swindon for a 7pm (UK) kick off at the County Ground in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

Wayne Burnett's side will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 5-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on Friday night, a game which saw Yusuf Akhamrich bag his first-ever Premier League 2 goal.

Having endured a mixed bag of results in the competition thus far, only a win will suffice this evening if we are to progress through to the knockout stages with us sitting a point adrift of tonight's opponents, who occupy second spot.

Game Format

If this evening's fixture is level at the end of the regulation 90 minutes it'll be followed up by a penalty shootout for the chance to earn a bonus point - however this won't be enough to see us into the next round.

Coverage

This game is exclusively live on Sky Sports + but we'll keep you up to date via the Spurs App & socials, with a full match report to follow after the final whistle.

Tickets

Tickets for this fixture are on sale for both home and away fans via the Swindon Town website, with prices as follows:

Adults: £10

65 & over: £5

Under 18: £2

The Opposition

A turbulent start to the season sees Swindon Town sat one place and four points above the relegation zone in League Two, having already parted company with former manager Mark Kennedy.

Will Wright was on the scoresheet on the opening day in a respectable 1-1 draw with newly promoted Chesterfield but that was followed up by back-to-back defeats, being knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a 4-2 loss to Crawley and a first league defeat falling 4-0 at home to Walsall.

The Robins briefly dropped into the relegation zone after a goalless draw with Crewe and a 2-1 defeat to George Abbott's Notts County, however that caused the side to rally, earning a 1-1 draw with Barrow thanks to a 98th minute leveller and a first win of the season - a thumping 4-0 win over Newport County for their first points at home of the season.

Back-to-back defeats against Carlisle and Port Vale dropped Kennedy's side back down the table, before a three-game unbeaten run saw the side pick up draws against Tranmere and Harrogate as well as a 3-2 win over Cheltenham.

However, consecutive 2-1 defeats against Doncaster and Salford spelled the end of Kennedy's five-month spell in charge, leaving the club just three points above the bottom two as they battle to avoid becoming just the second former Premier League club to be relegated out of the Football League.

After a four-year break from management, former Blackpool manager Ian Holloway has taken charge at the County Ground, with his first game ending in a 1-1 draw with Gillingham, which was followed by a 2-1 comeback win over Colchester to see them progress in the FA Cup on Saturday

One to watch

With four goals from his 11 appearances so far this season, Harry Smith is currently the Robins' top scorer this campaign.

Smith started his football career in the Brentford academy before switching his allegiance in west London to Chelsea. Gaining experience in non-league football, the forward representfed Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks Town, Sittingbourne, before a return of 13 goals in 19 league games for Folkestone Invicta earned him a move into the EFL with Millwall.

After six goals in 12 appearances for the Lions, as well as a loan spell at his current side, he joined Macclesfield Town, where he notched 13 goal involvements in 47 games.

Across the nest four seasons, the forward enjoyed two promotions from League Two, firstly with Northampton and then Leyton Orient, hitting over 30 goal involvements in over 100 appearances.

He also bagged seven times in 11 on loan at Barnet and 14 in 42 for Sutton United last season, but left Gander Green Lane for pastures new over the summer, rejoining familiar surroundings in Wiltshire.

Ref Watch

This evening's referee is Matthew Russell, he'll be assisted by Ryan McIlravey and Steven Plane, whilst the fourth official is Kevin Morris.
