Under-21s Coach Wayne Burnett has hailed the mentality of his players ahead of tonight’s Premier League Cup final at Craven Cottage (7pm UK, live on SPURSPLAY).
It’s the business end of a fine season for our Development Squad as we take on Fulham with a trophy on the line, while also continuing to compete in the Premier League 2 play-offs, where we’ll host Chelsea in the semi-finals at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday lunchtime.
We’d never previously entered the Premier League Cup at Under-21 level before this season but, with a number of players who tasted glory in the Under-17 and Under-18 versions of the competition last year in the squad, we’ve mirrored our strong league form to blaze a trail to this evening’s showpiece fixture.
As we prepare to face a talented Cottagers side, Wayne wants his charges to continue to show the strength of character that they have done all season in a bid to claim victory.
Any team that is going to have a chance to beat us will have to play very well.
“The players have been excellent and are deservedly now in a final,” he said. “We’re under no illusions as to how difficult the game will be because of the calibre of players that Fulham have, we’re expecting a very difficult game, but it’s one we’re looking forward to and we’re hoping we can get a positive result.
“The players have shown brilliant character and mentality at times this season and I think that any team that is going to have a chance to beat us will have to play very well. This team doesn’t know when it’s beaten, we’ve got a high work ethic and when you marry that with the qualities that we have, it can breed success. We’ve seen that with some of the performances that we’ve had and if we can hit the levels that we’ve hit for the majority of the campaign, it gives us a good opportunity to get a positive outcome.”
Tickets will be on sale at Craven Cottage this evening, subject to availability.
