The 2023/24 season in numbers

Thu 30 May 2024, 14:00|Tottenham Hotspur

After 280 days, our 2023/24 season came to a close with our final day win over Sheffield United.

Triumphing at Bramall Lane as we defeated the Blades 3-0 in the Premier League, it marked our 41st and last game of what was a very encouraging maiden campaign under Ange Postecoglou.

Joining us in June, 2023, Ange made an immediate impact on the Club and our performances on the pitch in the early months of the campaign showed just what is possible under his philosophy as we enjoyed our best ever start to a Premier League season.

Injuries and suspensions saw our form suffer over the late autumn but a pick up in the late winter and early spring saw us go onto secure a return to European football, finishing fifth in the top flight.

So, as we say goodbye to 2023/24, here is a look back at some of the numbers that made up the season.

Appearances

40 – In his maiden season in England, Guglielmo Vicario was our most-used player as he played 40 of our matches this term, missing just one match (our League Cup second round tie with Fulham). Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Dejan Kulusevski complete our top three, having both played in 39 of our 41 matches.

3,600 – Guglielmo also played more minutes than any other player, playing 3,600 minutes for us this term – 327 minutes more than any other player. The only other player to play for over 3,000 minutes this season was Pedro Porro, who was on the pitch for 3.273 minutes.

41 – Of the 41 games we played this season, only three players were involved in every matchday squad – Guglielmo Vicario, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal.

3,420 - Guglielmo was our only ever-present player in the Premier League this term, appearing in every match and playing every minute. Only 13 spurs players have managed that feat since the Premier League was formed in 1992. Can you name them?

18 – Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was our most-used substitute this season with the Dane having been brought on from the bench on 28 occasions. That's 10 more times than any other player.

21 – Pape Matar Sarr, meanwhile, was the player substituted the most, being withdrawn 23 times. James Maddison was next up, being withdrawn on 22 occasions.

Watch - Vicario's best saves from his maiden term in north London

50 – Rodrigo Bentancur (69), Richarlison (66) and Yves Bissouma (56) all made their 50th appearances for the Club.

Goals

76 – We scored 76 goals across all competitions this year, while we had 16 different goalscorers.

70 – 74 of those came in the Premier League – only in one other campaign have we scored more in the competition (86 in 2016/17).

71% - Of those 74 goals, 71 per cent (53) of them came from open play.

17 – For the first time in nine seasons, we had a different top goalscorer with Heung-Min Son taking the crown with an unmatched 17 goals this term. Richarlison was our only other player to hit double figures with 12 goals to his name in all competitions

250 - Heung-Min Son's late strike to seal our 3-1 win over Crystal Palace in March was the 250th goal scored at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (259).

160 - Sonny became our fifth-highest goalscorer of all time with his 160th goal seeing him overtake Cliff Jones' tally of 159.

150 - Sonny (162) scored his 150th goal for the Club, becoming just the sixth player in our history to reach that milestone.

120 - Sonny moved up to 22nd in the Premier League's all-time goalscoring chart as he moved onto 120 goals in the competition. He is now level with former Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard. He's now just three goals away from breaking into the top 20.

50 – Heung-Min Son (57) became the second player to score 50 goals at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

50 - Richarlison (60) scored his 50th goal in the Premier League.

39 - We enjoyed a run of scoring in 39 consecutive Premier League games - the second longest such run in Premier League history. The run lasted from 11 March, 2023, to 10 March, 2024.

27 - We scored in each of our first 27 league games under Ange Postecoglou. The last time a manager had overseen such a run was back enjoyed in 1951 when Arthur Rowe saw us score in our first 27 games of the 1950/51 Division One winning season.

10 - Richarlison (11) became the 21st different player to hit double figures for us in a Premier League season.

10 - For the third season in his Spurs career, Heung-Min Son provided 10+ goals and 10+ assists in the Premier League (2019/20, 2020/21 and 2023/24). No Spurs player has ever managed that feat more than once in their time with the Club.

1 – Sonny was the only player to score a hat-trick for us this season, registering a treble in our 5-2 win over Burnley in September.

Watch - All of Sonny's goals in 2023/24

Penalties

2 - We had two penalties awarded to us in all competition - both were taken and scored by Heung-Min Son, the first coming in our 4-1 win over Newcastle United in December before the second came at home in the north London derby.

Assists

17 – We had 13 different players provide an assist this term.

10 – Heung-Min Son and Brennan Johnson provided the most assists for the team, both registering 10 each - only Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins (13) and Chelsea's Cole Palmer (11) provided more in the Premier League. James Maddison recorded our next highest tally with nine.

10 - Brennan Johnson became the first Spurs player since Emmanuel Adebayor in 2011/12 to record 10+ assists in his debut season at the Club.

7 - Pedro Porro became the first defender in our Premier League history to provide 7+ assists in a single campaign.

31 – We used 31 players across all competitions this season, one more than last season. Meanwhile, we had six other players as part matchday squads this term.

16 years, 9 months & 3 days - When Mikey Moore made his Spurs debut against Manchester City earlier this month, he became our youngest ever player in Premier League history at 16 years, nine months and three days.

11 - All of our 11 debutants this season, as well as every player in our history, were assigned Legacy Numbers this season as part of our Legacy Numbers initiative.

Passing

2,586 – Cristian Romero completed 2,586 passes in the Premier League – only six players made more passes in the competition than the defender.

94.3 – Of players to play at least 10 games for us in the Premier League, Micky van de Ven enjoyed the best pass completion rate with 94.3 per cent of his passes reaching their intended target. Only Chelsea's Thiago Silva (94.9 per cent) enjoyed a better pass completion rate in the top flight.

2.4 - On average, James Maddison played 2.4 key passes per game in the Premier League this term - only four players in the entire competition managed more per game.

87.4% - We enjoyed an 87.4 per cent success rate for our pass completion this term - only three teams in the competition registered a greater percentage.

732 - We broke our record for most passes completed in a Premier League this season as we made 732 in our 3-1 win over Crystal Palace in March.

141 - Cristian Romero set a new Club record for passes completed in a Premier League game as he completed a staggering 141 passes as we beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in October.

Shooting

4.02 - Heung-Min Son out-performed his expected goals by 4.02. From the chances he had in front of goal this season, he was expected to score 12.98 goals. In reality, he actually managed to score 17 times from those opportunities. Only four players enjoyed a greater swing.

0.29 - Destiny Udogie enjoyed the best expected goals per shot in the Premier League last term. Essentially, despite having just nine shots in the competition in 2023/24, he was expected to score a higher proportion of them than any other player. And given the high-value of his opportunities, he still manage to execute them well in proportion, only seeing a -0.61 difference in his expected goals (2.61) to the actual number of goals he scored (2).

80% - Of Brennan Johnson's five Premier League goals this season, 80 per cent of them were scored within the six yard box.

Captains

3 – Three players wore the captain’s armband for us

Heung-Min Son– 35 times

Cristian Romero – 5 times

Rodrigo Bentancur – once

League numbers

66 – We picked up 66 points in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign - our 10th highest points tally in Premier League history.

6 – We drew just six matches across the campaign – only in the 2018/19 (2) and 2021/22 (5) Premier League seasons have we drawn less.

1 – Of those draws, not a single draw came at home - the first time we have seen that happen in the Premier League era. Since the competition's formation in 1992, only three clubs have gone an entire campaign without drawing a match at home - Manchester City (2008/09 and 2018/19), Manchester United (2012/13) and Chelsea (2016/17). It means we are now the only club in premier League history have recorded seasons without drawing a match at home (2023/24) or drawing a match away from home (2018/19).

21 - It means it is now 21 games since we last drew a match in N17 - a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in April, 2023. with the last draw in N17 before that coming in December, 2021 - a 2-2 draw with Liverpool - it also means it is now just one draw at home in the league in 48 games and two home draws in our last 67 such matches.

0 - Incredibly, we went another campaign without a 0-0 league draw. It has now been 81 matches since our last stalemate - that was a 0-0 draw away at Brentford in April, 2022.

0 - In terms of home 0-0 draws, well, remarkably, we are still yet to see one in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Sine we moved into our world-class home in April, 2019, we have played 100 league matches and none of them have finished 0-0. In fat, you would have to go back a whopping 13- league games for our last home 0-0 draw in the top flight - a 0-0 draw with Swansea City at Wembley Stadium in September, 2017. For reference, that was just our third home league game after saying goodbye to our former home White Hart Lane.

6 – We completed a league double over six teams this season – Nottingham Forest, AFC Bournemouth, Luton Town, Burnley, Sheffield United and Crystal Palace.

9 – We remained unbeaten against nine teams in the competition this season - Manchester United, Everton, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, AFC Bournemouth, Luton Town, Burnley, Sheffield United and Crystal Palace.

Other numbers

4 - Of players winning offside calls per game in the Premier League, both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero sit in the top four of players in the competition. Aston Villa's Diego Carlos sits top with 1.3 offside calls on per game while Micky sits second with (1.1) and Cuti sits fourth with 0.9 calls won per game.

510 - We were the most fouled team in the league in 2023/24 winning 510 fouls. That was 37 more than any other team.

62% - On average, we enjoyed 62% of possession across our 38 Premier League games - only Manchester City enjoyed a greater average possession with 65.4%.

37.38 - Micky van de Ven registered the fastest ever sprint by a player in Premier League history in February as he notched a top speed of 37.38km/h in our win over Brentford.

99.53 - Dejan Kulusesvski scored the latest match-winning goal in Premier League history when he fired home the winner on 99 minutes and 53 seconds in our dramatic 2-1 win over Sheffield United in September. This record was later overtaken by Chelsea's Cole Palmer (101 minutes 41 seconds) as the Blues beat Manchester United in April 4-3.

99.53 - Deki's goal was also saw us seal the latest ever winning comeback in Premier League history as, having trailed with 97 minutes 33 seconds on the clock, we went onto win the match. That record also stood until that game at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Manchester United when Chelsea trailed with 99 minutes on the clock and went onto win the game.
