Opposition watch (WSL) | Everton's form and players to watch

Thu 02 May 2024, 14:00|Tottenham Hotspur

It’s our final away game in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Saturday (12pm) and we face a trip to Walton Hall Park to face Everton. Here’s a closer look at Brian Sorensen’s side…

Form

Everton are ninth in the table and it has certainly been a season of up-and-down results for the Merseyside club, however, their last two results show how tough of a test they could present this weekend. The Toffees recorded an impressive result in their last outing in the league, securing a point against potential title hopefuls Arsenal at Walton Hall Park after an injury time equaliser, while they also held in-form Liverpool to a goalless draw with Liverpool at Goodison Park and recorded a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Friday 19 April.

Players to watch

A player that wrote her name into the headlines last weekend was Isabella Hobson, as the teenager came off the bench against Arsenal and rescued a point for the Toffees, heading home the equaliser in the fifth minute of injury time, becoming the youngster-ever goalscorer at 16 years and 180 days old. Captain Megan Finnigan is one of the longest-serving players at the club, making her debut in 2015 and has gone onto make over 150 appearances. The defender has scored on some big occasion this season, including netting the winner in the Merseyside derby back in October. Another experienced player is Toni Duggan, who came through the Everton ranks to help them win the 2009/10 Women’s FA Cup before successful spells with City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. After winning eight more domestic trophies, she returned to Everton in July 2021 and has 76 caps for England. Capped 28 times by the Netherlands, Katja Snoeijs is the club’s leading goalscorer this season with four goals in 20 appearances.

Manager – Brian Sorensen

Brian Sorensen took over as Everton Women’s manager in April, 2022, after success at Fortuna Hjorring where, during two stints at the Danish club, he won two league titles, a domestic cup and established Fortuna as regulars in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Sorensen also previously enjoyed cup success during spells with Danish sides IK Skovbakken and FC Nordsjaelland. He led Everton to sixth in the WSL in his first season last term and was rewarded with a new contract at the beginning of last month.

Last time out

A late penalty converted by Aurora Galli left us frustrated as we had to settle for a point in our previous meeting with Everton in November. Grace Clinton deservedly put us ahead as she was well-positioned inside the box to head home but, in the closing stages of the game, the midfielder was adjudged to have pushed Heather Payne to the ground inside the box, resulting in Galli to fire home from the spot-kick.
