Our last home game of the 2023/24 season ended in defeat on Tuesday night as two goals from Erling Haaland gave Manchester City all three points.

Here is the key action from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium...

  • A cagey first half, Rodrigo Bentancur and Phil Foden going close for either side, goalless at the break.
  • Erling Haaland opens the scoring six minutes into the second half.
  • Huge late chance for Heung-Min Son to level, denied by substitute keeper Stefan Ortega.
  • Stoppage time second for City, Haaland from the penalty spot.
  • Mikey Moore off the bench late on to become our youngest-ever Premier League player.

An entertaining game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium saw us push the reigning champions all the way, with Heung-Min Son spurning a glorious late chance to equalise when denied by City’s substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.

That came after Haaland had tapped in from close range in the 51st minute and the Norwegian striker then sealed the win in stoppage time, slamming home a penalty. The result means our hopes of a top four finish are over and we now need a point at Sheffield United on Sunday to secure fifth place, while City returned to the top of the table with the victory and will win the title if they defeat West Ham United in their final game.

The pre-match narrative revolved around how we would perform in a game which had major connotations for the destination of the league's crown, but none of that mattered once the game got underway as we matched City for most of the contest and were unlucky not to take something from the match.

We started well and had the first sight of goal after just six minutes. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg hit an excellent cross-field pass to Brennan Johnson, he squared to Rodrigo Bentancur just outside the area and his shot was tipped over by Ederson.

Ten minutes later, it was City’s turn to go close when Hojbjerg’s sliced clearance inside our box looped up for Phil Foden who caught his left-footed volley well but Guglielmo Vicario’s outstretched hand denied him, a superb save.

Much of the game was being played between the two boxes, with both sides showing plenty of intensity in their football, just not quite creating the chances the build-up play deserved. But the visitors did have opportunities late in the half, Josko Gvardiol just over with a volley at the far post while right on half-time both Haaland and Bernardo Silva saw shots blocked, the latter by a superb headed clearance denying a certain goal by Radu Dragusin, although the offside flag meant it wouldn't have counted.

And they went close again just over a minute after the restart as we were caught out playing from the back, the ball falling to Kevin De Bruyne whose shot on the turn was brilliantly tipped round the post by Vicario. But moments later, Son got on the end of Johnson’s low cross only for Ederson to smother his effort from close range.

The opening goal came just six minutes into the second half, De Bruyne played in down the right and his low cross was turned home on the edge of the six-yard box by Haaland.

The game was interrupted by lengthy stoppages after injuries to De Bruyne and Ederson but when we got going again after the latter, substitute Dejan Kulusevski almost equalised in the 71st minute when he bundled through a couple of challenges but saw his shot saved by Ortega, who had replaced Ederson.

Then, the most glorious opportunity to draw level with just four minutes remaining as Manuel Akanji was dispossessed by Johnson 40 yards from his own goal, the ball collected by Son who streaked clear with just Ortega to beat but the keeper won the battle, stopping Son’s effort with his legs.

That wasn’t the end of the drama though. Two minutes later, Jeremy Doku twisted and turned past Pedro Porro who upended him in the box, referee Chris Kavanagh pointing to the spot and Haaland blasted home from 12 yards to seal the victory for the visitors.

There was a positive moment for us in the closing minutes when Academy graduate Mikey Moore stepped off the bench for his Spurs debut, becoming our youngest-ever Premier League player in the process at 16 years and nine months old.

Ange's verdict

“It’s a disappointing result, a tight game decided by big moments that they took, and we didn’t, so, disappointing. They didn’t dominate in areas they normally dominate. We had good control of the game for the most part, limited their opportunities, and had some good moments ourselves. The first goal was disappointing, because there was a lack of discipline there, but after that we had two or three big chances to get back into the game, and you have to take them against opposition like City. You’re not going to create a bag full of chances against City and when they come, you have to take them.”
