Goalscorers Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven celebrate Micky's winner with Dane Scarlett...

Micky van de Ven hit an excellent late winner as we came from behind to defeat Burnley on Saturday afternoon, relegating the Clarets in the process.

Here is the key action from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium...

  • Burnley take the lead, Jacob Bruun Larsen firing home on 25 minutes.
  • Pedro Porro levels it up in the 32nd minute with a fine goal.
  • We dominate the second half, Brennan Johnson and Pape Matar Sarr going close.
  • An 82nd-minute winner, Micky van de Ven scoring a superb goal.

The Dutch defender – who won all of our supporters’ Player of the Season awards prior to kick-off at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – crowned a great day for him personally by firing home in the 82th minute to leave us still in with a chance of a top four finish.

Burnley needed to win to avoid relegation and took the lead through Jacob Bruun Larsen before Pedro Porro equalised with another stunner, having himself scooped our Goal of the Season award for his superb winner against the Clarets in the FA Cup earlier this season.

It was a lively opening in the north London sunshine, with chances for both sides in the first 10 minutes. First, James Maddison saw his effort deflect off Charlie Taylor for a corner with four minutes gone, before seconds later, Guglielmo Vicario parried Vitinho’s back-post header and Cristian Romero cleared the danger. In the seventh minute, Brennan Johnson side-footed an effort which was pushed around the post by Arijanet Muric in the Burnley goal.

Heung-Min Son then dragged a couple of shots just wide before the Clarets took the lead on 25 minutes. Sander Berge broke through three tackles before sliding the perfect ball in behind for Bruun Larsen who clipped it past Vicario to boost their survival hopes.

But we were level just after the half-hour mark, Johnson touching the ball off to Pedro Porro near half-way and he just kept going all the way into the Burnley box before unleashing a fierce right-foot drive that flew past Muric. It was almost 2-1 moments later when Johnson pounced on Muric’s pass out to Taylor and tried to catch the keeper out at his near post but found the side netting.

The last kick of the half saw Bruun Larsen again on the end of a breakaway, this time drilling low for Vicario to save and we went in all square at the break.

We had to wait until 12 minutes into the second period for the first big chance, Wilson Odobert dispossessing Dejan Kulusevski before seeing his effort flick off Romero and fly just over the bar, with Maxime Esteve heading over seconds later. Then, at the other end, Maddison got clear down the left, chopped inside the defender in the area only for Muric to deny him from eight yards out.

The game was being played out mostly in the Burnley half at this stage, despite their need for a second goal, but we weren’t really working Muric too much, Kulusveski forcing him into one comfortable save in the 68th minute.

However, our second almost came 12 minutes from time, Johnson touching wide on the stretch at the back post from Son’s tempting cross, and again moments later when Romero burst from defence to cut back for Pape Matar Sarr, but Muric made a fine stop to deny him.

Then, with 82 minutes on the clock, Maddison played a wonderful pass in to van de Ven, who went past a defender on the edge of the box, moved around the ball so it was on his favoured left foot and then sent a precise finish past Muric into the bottom corner.

It was all Spurs in the closing stages, although we couldn’t add to our tally despite some good openings.

Ange's verdict

"It was always going to be a tricky game for us because as much as you try and put it to one side, losing four games in a row, for the players there's always a bit of stress and anxiety. I thought in the first half we controlled the game really well - I just thought we were a bit anxious in the final third with our decision making. I thought Pedro's goal before half-time was really important, and the second half was better, and we were stronger after half-time - we always are. It's just that some recent games have got away from us, but today we were right in it. It's pleasing for the players and credit to them for not getting too wound up and just playing our football. "
