Spurs stories
Steve Archibald

"We'll, take, more care of you... Archibald, Archibald..."
Four years, four cup finals, three trophies, 77 goals in 189 appearances, Golden Boot winner in 1980/81 - no wonder Steve Archibald looks back so fondly at his time at Spurs...
Signed after winning the Scottish Premier League title with Aberdeen in the summer of 1980, Steve formed a deadly double act with fellow hitman Garth Crooks, who also joined us from Stoke that summer - they scored 104 goals in their first three seasons together. Steve then teamed up with Mark Falco in 1983/84, the pair bagging 49 goals between them on our way to UEFA Cup glory in 1984.
That was the end of the road at Spurs for Steve, who swapped N17 for the Nou Camp in the summer of 1984. He was a big hit at the Catalan giants, helping Barca win La Liga for the first time in 11 years in his first season, then reaching the European Cup Final in 1986, where they lost to Steaua Bucharest on penalties.
Capped 27 times by Scotland, Steve later had spells at Blackburn Rovers, Hibernian, Espanyol, St Mirren, Clyde, Reading, Ayr, Fulham and East Fife.
Now 67, Steve was back for his first view of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the north London derby last month...
"My connection with Spurs is unbeatable, my feeling for the club is unbeatable than for any other club. That’s not just nonsense. It’s absolutely that way."

"I had two choices, Spurs or go somewhere else..."
"A player who I played with at Aberdeen, a good friend, convinced me to come here and it was a great. The day I signed I remember going to the goal post and standing beside the post and someone turned on the sprinklers! That’s a great memory. My connection with Spurs is unbeatable, my feeling for the club is unbeatable than for any other club. That’s not just nonsense. It’s absolutely that way. My connection with the fans was unbeatable."

"Crooksy was perfect for me..."
"He was quick, he could score a goal and we worked really hard together in training. People say to me, ‘that partnership was like telepathy’, and it looked like telepathy, but it was all down to bloody hard work! On matchdays, it worked. He scored a bundle of goals, I scored a bundle of goals, we won a bundle of trophies, the rest is history…"

"Myself, Crooksy coming in, maybe the team needed that cutting edge, and we gave it to them..."
"We had fantastic skill in the middle of the park with two creative players and it worked for us perfectly. Winning a trophy in the first season was magnificent. In all the seasons I was here, we were in cup finals, we won three and should have won the other against Liverpool (League Cup Final, 1982) but we gave the ball away in the last two minutes and, again, the rest is history...."

"The derby... the fixture means everything to Spurs fans, and I remember as a player it meant everything to me."
"To score in the derby matches… that was my aim. Not just derby matches, but all the big matches, United, Liverpool, whoever, but especially derby matches. I was fortunate enough to break the duck of when Pat Jennings left Spurs for Arsenal, no Spurs player had scored against him for years, and in my first derby here, I scored two goals and we won 2-0, fabulous! It was sensational. It was an amazing match. That sticks with me a lot, the reaction of the fans, the connection I had with the fans was something special. For players, this game represents an amazing opportunity to become a hero, it really is."

"It’s hard to talk you through my penalty in the UEFA Cup Final shoot-out, because it was like I was in someone else’s body!"
"We all knew the importance of the match to everybody, and to me, personally. I remember going to get the ball. I was nervous. I put the ball down, stepped back… and my nerves disappeared. I was guided by something, and the ball ended up in the back of the net."

"How do I sum it all up? For me, it was all about the big occasions..."
"You have to play the lesser occasions as well, by the way, if you lose those games, you’ll win nothing. It’s about an incredibly strong mentality, an iron cast mentality you have to have to win things. You have to be on it every single day, work hard because on the bench, someone is there waiting to take your job! When Crooksy and I came to Spurs, it gave the team the hope we were going to do something because we could score goals... lots of goals. Everyone tuned in and it was rock solid, it really was. It was a magnificent time. I’m sure the fans loved it, we loved it and we played our hearts out. I loved my time here."
