Dejan Kulusevski celebrates his second with James Maddison...

A comfortable victory and Europa League football were secured on Sunday afternoon as we defeated Sheffield United on the final day of the 2023/24 season.

Here is the key action from Bramall Lane...

  • Good early chances for the home side, hitting the post but unable to break through.
  • Dejan Kulusevski opens the scoring in the 14th minute.
  • An excellent second on 59 minutes, Pedro Porro crashing home from 18 yards.
  • It becomes 3-0 after 65 minutes as Kulusevski adds his second.

Needing a point against the already relegated Blades to guarantee fifth place and a spot in next season’s Europa League, we went out in style at Bramall Lane with a 3-0 win. Dejan Kulusevski set us on the way after a nervy start before adding another in the second half, shortly after Pedro Porro had rifled home another fine goal.

It means we finished on 66 points in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge, three ahead of Chelsea in sixth and just two behind Aston Villa and will welcome European football back to N17 next term.

In the glorious south Yorkshire sunshine, the first opening of the game came on just three minutes and it fell for the home side, Ben Brereton Diaz blazing over from the edge of the box while Gustavo Hamer hit a 22-yard free-kick straight at Guglialmo Vicario four minutes later.

It was a shaky start from us and the Blades went close again in the 10th minute, Brereton Diaz getting on the end of Hamer’s deep cross only to send the ball against the far post. But, against the run of play, we took the lead on 14 minutes as James Maddison and Heung-Min Son combined to find Kulusevski and he hit a sweet left-footed drive past Wes Foderingham and in off the far post.

That settled us down as we started to take control and really should have added to our tally. First, Kulusevski was denied by Foderingham before a flurry of chances in quick succession - Rodrigo Bentancur’s low shot hit the post, we recycled the ball with Brennan Johnson finding Son and his effort brought a smart save out of Foderingham, before Porro’s superb cross was prodded wide by Cristian Romero unmarked from eight yards out.

As we continued to push, Foderingham dived to his right to parry away Porro’s fierce drive but the Blades then hit us on the counter, however Cameron Archer dragged his effort wide of Vicario’s far post.

We almost doubled our lead on the stroke of half-time, Son’s reverse pass putting Maddison in on goal inside the box but the Blades' goalkeeper again was equal to it. However, we did make it 2-0 just before the hour mark with a typical rocket from Porro! Foderingham had made yet another fine stop to keep out Micky van de Ven’s effort, Johnson picked up the loose ball and laid it off to our Spanish full-back who rifled it into the back of the net.

And we added another shortly after with a lovely goal, Maddison played in down the left and his first-time low cross was turned home by Kulusevski for his second of the game.

The home side had a sight of goal in the 80th minute but substitute Rhian Brewster dragged well wide when in behind our defence, while at the other end, Son picked out Johnson with a lovely ball to the back post but our number 22 couldn’t find the target on the stretch.

It mattered not though as the points were already in the bag and we held on to the clean sheet in the closing stages.

Team news saw Postecoglou make one change to the team that started against Manchester City on Tuesday night with Kulusevski in for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Guglielmo Vicario completed an ever-present campaign with 38 out of 38 starts in his debut Premier League season.

Alfie Whiteman was back on the bench for the first time this season - alongside Brandon Austin - and they were two of six Academy graduates in the matchday squad with Jamie Donley, Oliver Skipp, Mikey Moore and Dane Scarlett also on the bench – the latter trio entering the game late on.

Ange's verdict...

“I thought it was good. It was important we finished the season off with a positive performance and a positive result and we did both of those. It was a good way to sign off. I was pleased with our general focus. It isn’t easy, last game of the year, Sheffield United nothing to play for… potentially you could get dragged away from your own ambitions but, for the most part, I thought we were really focussed and scored some good goals, probably should have had more, but their goalkeeper was outstanding. We also kept a clean sheet, so a few things there that were positive for us.”
