Opposition watch | Liverpool's form and players to watch

Fri 03 May 2024, 14:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Anfield is calling as we travel to Merseyside to face Liverpool on Sunday (4.30pm UK). It's the last time we'll face a Reds side under the leadership of Jurgen Klopp - here's a closer look at a team still in the Premier League title race...

Form

Top of the Premier League as recently as a month ago, Liverpool have picked the wrong time to have a dip in form - they are now five points adrift of Arsenal at the summit with only three matches remaining thanks to a run of one win in their last five. That run includes a 2-2 draw at United where they should have been out of sight at half-time, a 1-0 home loss against Palace despite registering 21 shots to Palace's eight and a 2-2 draw last time at West Ham, where again they out-shot their opponents, this time 28-11. Regardless, on form this season, Anfield is the toughest place to visit - Liverpool are top of the home form stats with 13 wins, three draws and just one loss (Palace on 14 April) in their 17 matches at Anfield this season.

Players to watch

Alisson Becker is back in goal for his impressive debutant Caoimhin Kelleher and in front of him, the familiar faces of Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk lined up last time out at West Ham, alongside Jarell Quansah. Van Dijk has been listed as a doubt, but we all know the threat of Robertson and Alexander-Arnold raiding down the flanks. It was up front where Jurgen Klopp made some interesting changes against West Ham, with Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott the front three and the likes of Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah on the bench. Japan international Wataru Endo has impressed in midfield and alongside him, Cuti Romero's World Cup winning team-mate Alexis Mac Allister will look to pull the strings and get forward himself - he's weighed in with four goals and five assists in his 30 appearances so far. Meanwhile, full-back Conor Bradley, one of the finds of the season, has made 22 appearances in all competitions in his breakthrough season, aged 20.

Manager - Jurgen Klopp

We're entering the final lap of Jurgen Klopp's time at Liverpool, as he announced his decision to step down at the end of the season back in January. A one-club man as a player with FSV Mainz 05 in Germany, Klopp took over as manager on retiring and led the team to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history in 2003/04. They were relegated in 2007, but Borussia Dortmund soon came knocking, and Klopp delivered two Bundesliga titles, a German cup and a Champions League final to Die Schwarzgelben before arriving in the Premier League at Liverpool in 2015 - his first match, coincidentally, a goalless draw at the Lane. His 'heavy metal' football has since secured Liverpool's first Premier League title in 30 years in 2019/2020 plus the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup. They've also been runners-up in two more Champions League finals and the Europa League. He's coached over 1,000 games in his career and has a 60% win rate at Liverpool.

Last time we met

A thriller in N17 back in September. Curtis Jones was sent off early, Heung-Min Son fired us ahead on 36 minutes but Cody Gakpo levelled for Liverpool in first half injury time. Diogo Jota was also red carded on 69 minutes and we laid siege to the Reds' goal in the final quarter of the game. Liverpool defended brilliantly with nine men but we finally got there in the 97th minute when Joel Matip turned Pedro Porro's cross into his own net.
