Opposition watch | City's form and players to watch
Mon 13 May 2024, 16:15|Tottenham Hotspur
All eyes will be on Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night as we face Manchester City in our final home match of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. City are flying - here's a look at their form and players to watch...
Form
City tend to be relentless at this time of year. They ended 2021/22 with nine wins and three draws and won 12 on the spin on the way to a hat-trick of titles in 2022/23. This time around, chasing an unprecedented fourth-successive crown, they're on a 21-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, winning 18. The last team to stop them winning were Arsenal, with a goalless draw at the Etihad on 31 March. Their last league defeat was against Villa on 6 December. They've won their last seven in the Premier League and have scored at least four times in six of them, the latest a 4-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday. However, we're all aware of their Premier League record at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - four matches, four defeats, no goals - although they did beat us 1-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January.
Players to watch
Classy Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol has come to the fore with four goals in City's last five games, including a double against Fulham. Bernado Silva just keeps going and assisted twice at Craven Cottage, he now has six goals and seven assists this term. Phil Foden has enjoyed a fine season, already voted Football Writers' Footballer of the Year, and has 17 goals and eight assists in 33 in the Premier League. Often seen as their most important player, Rodri knits it all together from central midfield. Top of the passing charts in the Premier League, he's on a personal run of 48 matches unbeaten in the competition. Erling Haaland keeps scoring - he's currently heading towards the Golden Boot with 25 goals, four clear of Chelsea's Cole Palmer - and Kevin de Bruyne is up to nine assists in only 16 appearances due to injury this term after setting up Gvardiol's opener at Fulham.
Manager - Pep Guardiola
One of the most influential figures in modern football, Guardiola came through Barcelona's La Masia Academy system from the age of 13, made his debut in 1990 and remained in the side for the next 11 years, winning six La Liga titles, the European Cup (against Sampdoria at Wembley in 1992) and Olympic gold with Spain (also in 1992). He later played in Italy, Qatar and Mexico and won 47 caps for Spain. His coaching journey also started at the Nou Camp, first with Barcelona B, then onto the first team in 2008. He led the Catalan giants to 13 major trophies including three La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues before a switch to Bayern Munich in 2012, where he also won a hat-trick of titles in the Bundesliga. He joined City in 2016 and has taken 13 major trophies to the blue half of Manchester, including five Premier League titles and the big one, City's first Champions League success as part of the treble last season.
Last time we met
It was another thriller between the teams when we last met in the Premier League - 3-3 at the Etihad in December - but the last time we met came in the fourth round of the FA Cup at the end of January, when City scored a controversial late winner via Nathan Ake after Guglielmo Vicario looked to be impeded by Ruben Dias from Kevin de Bruyne's corner.
