Opposition watch | Burnley's form and league scenario ahead of Saturday's clash

Fri 10 May 2024, 11:55|Tottenham Hotspur

Three games to go and it's Burnley up next in the Premier League as we return to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (3pm UK). There's so much on the line - here's a closer look at a Burnley side who have to win to keep alive their hopes of staying up.

Form

You can look at Burnley's form in many ways - two wins in 18, one defeat in four - but a run of one defeat in eight came to an end with a 4-1 loss at home against Newcastle last time out, where they trailed 3-0 at half-time. That recent unbeaten sequence only included one win, against Brentford, but also good draws on the road against West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester United. Indeed, away form has been slightly better this term - Burnley have 14 points from 18 away games, taking points in eight of those matches, whereas they've taken just 10 points from 18 at Turf Moor. It's all on the line though - they have to win to give themselves a chance of avoiding the drop with what could be an all-or-nothing clash against Forest on the final weekend.

Players to watch

Lyle Foster has five goals and three assists in his 22 appearances and partnered Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana up front in a 4-4-2 system in the recent 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Always looking to play their football, there are some familiar faces in Burnley's side - Sander Berge, formerly of Sheffield United, Josh Cullen, Dara O'Shea - both on target in the draw at Chelsea - Johann Gudmundsson, Charlie Taylor and striker Jay Rodriguez, set to make his 250th appearance for the Clarets. James Trafford has impressed this season but Kosovo international goalkeeper Arijanet Muric has taken over in goal for the last eight games - he played in our FA Cup third round tie back in January.

Manager - Vincent Kompany

One of the playing greats of the modern era, Manchester City legend and captain who led them to their first Premier League title in 2011/12 and three more after that, two FA Cups and four League Cups in 360 appearances between 2008-2019, Kompany returned to Belgium and Anderlecht in 2019 in a player/manager role and was then appointed at Burnley in the summer of 2022. Burnley had just been relegated, but with a new playing style, Kompany secured an instant return, clinching promotion with seven games remaining and the title a few matches later. Capped 84 times by Belgium, he led the Red Devils to third place at the 2018 World Cup.

Last time we met

After an impressive 5-2 win at Turf Moor earlier in the season, we met again in the third round of the FA Cup at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January, where a close game was decided by one of the goals of the season - Pedro Porro stepping up from full-back and belting a beauty into the top corner from 25 yards.
