Mikey Moore scored again while Callum Olusesi provided an assist as England Under-17s secured qualification for the knockout stages of the European Under-17 Championships with a 3-1 victory over Spain in Larnaca on Monday evening.

Needing a positive result in their final match in Group D following defeat to Portugal last week, the Young Lions didn’t disappoint as midfielder Callum – making his first start of the tournament after two previous substitute appearances – set up Shumaira Mheuka to give them a sixth-minute lead.

After Adrian Arnucio’s equaliser for Spain, Mikey came up with a superb strike – his fourth goal in three games – in the 73rd minute to restore England’s advantage, before Ethan Nwaneri completed the scoring.

Spain finished the game with 10 men following the 89th-minute dismissal of Jesus Fortea for a second bookable offence.

Callum was withdrawn in the 63rd minute, while Mikey completed the full match.

The result means England finished second in their group behind Portugal and will now face Italy in the quarter-finals on Thursday (6.30pm UK).
