Ange Postecoglou described Guglielmo Vicario as ‘a great addition to our football club’ after the goalkeeper completed an ever-present first campaign in the Premier League in our 3-0 win at Sheffield United on Sunday.
Snapped up from Empoli in the summer, ‘Vic’ has made a seamless transition from Serie A to the Premier League with the icing on the cake a first cap for Italy in March.
He’s made 110 saves in those 38 matches and testament to his consistent form, official Premier League statistics have him down for zero errors leading to goals. On top of keeping the ball out, he’s often the start of our possession-based football, passing ‘bravely’ against an opposition press – he’s made 1,371 passes this term. Just as importantly, he’s proved an instant hit with supporters.
He’s been a great addition to our football club not just as a player, but as a person.
Speaking after Vic's seventh clean sheet in the top flight in our season finale at Bramall Lane – where Deki Kulusevski’s double and another rocket from Pedro Porro saw us secure fifth and a place in the UEFA Europa League next season – Ange was full of praise for his goalkeeper.
"It’s important to know, and I said that the other week, we’ve a lot of guys who have just broken into the Premier League – Vic, Micky, Destiny, guys like Pape, it’s their first full season and credit to them for the way they’ve performed, their consistency," he said.
"Vic’s been outstanding. He’s been a great addition to our football club not just as a player, but as a person. I know there’s more in him as well, and that’s exciting."
