Timo Werner: “When you have 60,000 fans behind you, you can feel them”

He’s new to the Club, but it hasn’t taken Timo Werner long to recognise the impact on the team of having 60,000 Spurs fans roaring them on at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
That was certainly apparent again on Saturday, as we came from 1-0 down to beat Crystal Palace 3-1 with three goals in 11 minutes, 77-88. That made it seven wins and two draws in our last 11 matches in the Premier League.
Even more pertinent to Timo was that he started that comeback with his first goal for us, having missed our best chance in the first half, where he raced through from halfway only to be denied one-on-one by Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
With everyone with us, the noise… when you have 60,000 fans behind you, you hear them, you feel them...
A bright spark throughout down our left - and praised for an ‘aggressive’ performance by Ange Postecoglou - Timo made amends when he tapped home from Brennan Johnson’s cross to level the scores. Celebrations were short and sharp, however, as Timo knew momentum was with us and it was time to get straight back for the kick-off. It wasn’t long before Cuti Romero headed us into a 2-1 lead before Heung-Min Son finished the job two minutes from time.
Speaking to us on The Review Show, Timo said: “I’m very happy, especially after the first half when I missed a big chance. A lot of ballast was falling down on my shoulders, as we would say in Germany! But, I enjoyed the moment to score my first goal here in this stadium.
“I wanted to celebrate but when I realised no-one was coming over, I knew it was only 1-1 and we had work to do! So, I went straight back to the middle.
“You have to say that their free-kick... the 1-0 was not deserved at that time for Palace. They were not once in front of our goal in the second half and we did well after half-time. We were closer to scoring the first goal, but like it’s been over the last few weeks, since I’ve been here, we’ve always been 1-0 down and had to come back, but we did it again and it’s an even better feeling at the end of the game.
“With everyone with us, the noise... when you have 60,000 fans behind you, you hear them, you feel them, especially after we made it 1-1. They also saw we were clearly the better team in this game, so they helped us a lot. You could see at 3-1 how everyone was happy and pleased to win this game.”
