Spurs 2-1 Luton Town

Premier League

Disappointment on a difficult afternoon...

Another second-half fightback and another late winner saw us take the three points following a 2-1 victory over Luton Town on Saturday afternoon.

Here is the key action from a lively afternoon in N17...

  • Early breakthrough for Luton, Tahith Chong scoring on three minutes.
  • Heung-Min Son hits both posts with an effort but we trail at the break.
  • All square on 51 minutes, Issa Kabore putting through his own net.
  • The winner finally comes after plenty of pressure, Son scoring on 86 minutes.

Having fallen behind to an early strike from Tahith Chong at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, our run of not scoring in the first half continued into a sixth Premier League game as we trailed at the interval. But once again, it was a second-half recovery that saw us home with an own goal from Issa Kabore levelling it up before Heung-Min Son fired home the winner with just four minutes of normal time left.

The victory moved us back up to fourth in the table, only on goals scored from Aston Villa, who were due to be in action on Saturday evening.

The visitors took just three minutes to open the scoring after ex-Spur Andros Townsend dispossessed Son just outside the Luton area and ran 80 yards up the pitch before finding Ross Barkley, who in turn squared to Chong and his left-foot finish found the bottom corner.

We responded well and had great chances to level, the first after a quarter-of-an-hour when Dejan Kulusevski picked out Timo Werner down the left and the German turned Kabore inside out but then sent his effort just wide of the far post.

How we didn’t score five minutes later remains a mystery. First, Son was played in on goal, rounded Thomas Kaminski only for his shot to hit both posts with the rebound falling to Werner, whose effort was blocked by Kabore. The ball then came to Pape Matar Sarr, but his shot was blocked by Reece Burke inside the six-yard box and Luton were able to clear.

The rest of the half saw us enjoy plenty of possession but fail to test Kaminski, before a couple of chances for each side on the stroke of half-time. Alfie Doughty’s volley from Townsend’s deep cross was blocked by Pedro Porro and Luke Berry headed a yard wide from the corner and the half ended with a break from us but again we were thwarted with a block, Chong throwing himself in front of Son’s drive.

Once again we needed a big second half and made the perfect start with an equaliser just six minutes in. Half-time substitute Brennan Johnson was the architect, playing a one-two with Pedro Porro before delivering a wonderful cross which Kabore diverted past his own goalkeeper.

We were well on top at this stage and could have added another, Kabore twice clearing from dangerous crosses while Kaminski saved Son’s drive at the end of another great move. But Luton still carried a threat and it needed an excellent sprawling save from Guglielmo Vicario to deny Jordan Clark in the 65th minute.

But the play was predominantly in the Luton half and we went close again when Pedro Porro drilled a yard over the bar before Johnson got on the end of Giovani Lo Celso’s cross, Kaminski saved and the ball rolled along the goal-line before Doughty cleared.

The pressure finally told with four minutes remaining when the comeback was complete. Son led the charge out from the back following a Luton corner, playing in Werner down the left, his low cross was touched back by Johnson into Son’s path and his drive beat Kaminski with the help of a deflection off Daiki Hashioka to secure a big three points.

Son’s goal was his 160th for Spurs, moving him above Cliff Jones and into fifth place outright in our all-time top goalscorers list, while Lo Celso made his 100th Spurs appearance.

Ange's verdict...

"It was a good performance, certainly dominated the game, had enough chances, made it difficult for ourselves with a disappointing goal we conceded, but I thought the lads kept their heads really well in the second half, kept playing our football, all the subs made an impact when they came on and we got what we deserved. That’s testament to the lads’ belief in what we’re doing, especially at this time of the year, every game is important, not just for us, but for every team. It’s only natural that there’s some anxiety in the stands, but like I said, the boys believe in the process in our football, kept peppering away and in the end, both of our goals came from good moves and I thought that was important."
