Second-half goals from James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Heung-Min Son and Timo Werner gave us a huge 4-0 victory at 10-man Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Here is the main action from an eventful day at Villa Park...

  • A quiet, goalless first half.
  • James Maddison opens the scoring five minutes into the second period.
  • Brennan Johnson quickly adds a second goal for us after a mistake at the back for Villa.
  • The hosts' John McGinn is shown a straight red card after his challenge on Destiny Udogie.
  • We add two more goals in stoppage time through Heung-Min Son and Timo Werner to complete a 4-0 win.

Billed as a significant match in the race for a top four finish, we breezed into a 2-0 lead shortly after half-time and then capitalised on the sending-off of home captain John McGinn to add two more goals late on, moving to within two points of the fourth-placed hosts with a game in hand.

There was no sign of what was to come after a relatively quiet first period - Ollie Watkins bustled past Cristian Romero but was denied by a superb tackle by his retreating centre-back partner Micky van de Ven early on, while the same Villa player was denied by a Romero block right at the end of the half, with Lucas Digne subsequently sending a stooping header just wide of the far post.

We lost the services of van de Ven just after the interval, the defender limping off after brilliantly denying Leon Bailey, who was later flagged offside, with Radu Dragusin thrust in for his most significant amount of game time yet, and the January signing didn't disappoint with some key interventions throughout the rest of the game.

We took the lead just after that, Pape Matar Sarr - one of three changes to the starting XI from last week's home win over Crystal Palace - advancing down the right and squaring for the arriving Maddison to steer home on the stretch from six yards out. Three minutes later, Dejan Kulusevski stole possession from Youri Tielemans and it was three-on-one at the back for Villa, Son teeing up Johnson to turn home, much to the delight of the travelling faithful.

Things got worse for Villa on 65 minutes when their skipper McGinn was shown a straight red card for his challenge on Destiny Udogie right in front of the dugouts, just seconds after his low drive across our box from the right had been clawed away down low by the brave Guglielmo Vicario.

From there, the hosts were beaten and we did a fine job of maintaining control of the ball - it was only a late corner that caused us a slight problem but we cleared our lines before extending our lead in stoppage time. Kulusevski, whose shot moments earlier had deflected behind for a corner, laid a low ball across from the right for Son to hammer a first-time shot high into the net in the 91st minute, before Werner guided Son's cut-back from the left inside the far post on his right foot three minutes later to notch his second goal in as many games and round off a terrific afternoon for us.

Ange's verdict...

"I’m delighted, yes, the boys were outstanding today in all facets. Villa are a good side, especially here, really tough to beat. The crowd make a good atmosphere for them. I thought we handled all that really well, especially in the first half where they were going to have the energy, but I just felt, even towards the end of the first half, our continual pressing, tempo and intensity were beginning to wear on them and that was the message at half-time, perseverance, and got off to a flying start in the second half, which was great and then the quality of our football shone through."
